New tire, safe to run with my nearly worn out tires?

I don't know the load rating differences between the regular wheel and spare wheel, but if you bought some different lugs I don't see an issue running the spare full time. Some have found 4 spares, powder coated them and run them full time.

Thanks. I am not thinking "full time", just strong enough to get me from the off-road to civilization without much concern. My spare tire is still the original-spec Goodyear with full tread. I suppose Discount would be happy to sell me the lugs that are needed and keep in the the glove box.

In that case I'd just run the factory lugs with the spare until you can swap it out and not worry about it.

The OP said it is a Temporary. I kinda think I have to believe him. If it says on the tire temporary use it is safe to assume it is actually for only temporary use.

I think @RIX TUX was trying to clarify the tire can be normal-spec even when mounted on a temporary-use rim (for all of the reasons discussed).

Even worse if you buy parts and then pay to stuff it in storage.

Fox Elite 2.5s, Icon RXTs, SCS BR6s -38 in stealth indigo, Falcon T8 Seekers -38 in electric teal, kicker key 200.4/500.1, focals, jl stealthbox, Bakflip X4S, Pro Led headlights & harness, SS3 Max fogs, SS3 pro ditch, high flying led mirror turn signals, husky x act floor mats, trd catback/shift knob, tint, NOCO charger and jump pack, rough country seat covers, tc bed stiffeners, bed mat, vleds bedlights/footwell lights/total tails, arb twin/desertdoesit mount under passenger seat, tail gate power lock/sabellco lock, ect.

I bought the lift at Barrett Jackson in January 23. They've been in the box ever since. I want to send them to Accutune before installing. I need to get on that before tires are due again in 10k miles. :mudding:

I thought I was done, but I want/need a shell to replace the tonneau for the extra space. Front/rear bumpers and sliders would be nice too. :annoyed:

Theory is that the different diameters will cause axle wind up and grenade your diff. Im no engineer but i think with open differentials it shouldnt affect it with such a small difference in diameter

yep it has a warning sticker like the many warnings now ("don't drink the acid in the battery")
but it is a full size steel wheel and same tire as the other 4, some here use 4 of them and as a permanent set so they must be ok.......it may be a warning since the offset may be different so it might handle different if using only one

It is BEST to replace all 4 tires at the same time. On a 2wd vehicle you can get by with 2 new and 2 old tires as long as the new and old are on the same axle. On an AWD vehicle it is important that all 4 tires are the same size with pretty close to the same amount of tread. On a 4X4 you can do OK with different tires on each axle as long as you don't engage 4x4, treat it like a 2wd truck. Actually, you could engage 4x4 if conditions are really bad enough for there to be wheel spin.

As tires wear they are effectively one size smaller than they were when new by the time you replace them. That effectively changes your axle ratio. If you have 3.73 gears when the tires are new, you'll be closer to 3.90 by the time you wear them out. If you have mismatched tires and operate in 4X4 or AWD you end up with 3.73 gears on one axle and 3.90 on the other. That will really put the drivetrain in a bind.

But for short term use do what you have to do, just don't engage 4X4.

Just saying ... TW is not all about spending money. In this thread, I kave learned much about tire issues when things go bad in remote areas.

Negative Shipmate. That is not true. It would only be the case if you were locked front and rear and had a center differential lock and were on firm pavement that didn't allow slipping.

This video is necessary for those that don't understand how differentials work -

    difference in circumference.

to travel a given distance, the 3 worn tires might make 50 rotations because their circumference is smaller.

to travel the same distance with a new tire, it has a larger outside radius because of the non-worn rubber, so it might only travel 40 rotations to arrive at that same distance. meaning that somewhere, the difference needs to be made up.

any 4wd system is a locked system, where all 4 tires either need to have similar circumferences, or be on a loose surface that allows the tires to skid to overcome the differences in rotational distance/circumferences.

awd systems will have multiple differentials that will allow different tires to go faster or slower than the other 4 tires. but the same systems don't typically offer as good of off-road performance. that said, many awd systems specifically state in the owners manual that all tires should be within 3/32's of tread depth to each other tire at all times to prevent excess heat from building up in the system.

Yeah, I posted without thinking. I barely know what that is since none of my vehicles have them. So you can't have 5 of the same tires mounted on the same rims?

I am sensitive to tire diameter/circumference differences because the Tacoma replaces a Subaru Outback. With Subaru AWD, a tire circumference difference supposedly can wreak havoc. Even so, Subarus come with for-real temporary spare tires that are close to the OEM tires in diameter. But not the same diameter.

The 'temporary use only' sticker that was stuck on my 2023 Tacoma's spare wheel continues to be a real puzzlement. The spare tire is an exact duplicate in size, brand, model, load range and tread pattern as the four tires on the ground. The spare wheel is the same diameter and width, but steel instead of aluminum. I measured the diameter of the spare tire and it matched the diameter of the four tires on the ground. OK, I didn't use a caliper or a micrometer, I used a tape measure, but c'mon. I would not hesitate to use that wheel and tire on the ground for an extended period of time. Does the spare have a tire pressure sensor? That I do not know.

I want to soon replace the spare steel wheel with an OEM aluminum wheel so I can start a 5 tire rotation. If I have to install a tire pressure sensor, then I'll drive off that bridge when I get to it.
