Time for new tires next week. Still can't make up my mind. Stay with 265/75/16 or get the 285's and lose a little gas mileage. I'm 49 now and guess I think a little more about economical things instead of the good looks of the 285's. Still don't know?? You guys with the 285's, am I looking at only 1-2 mpg's or 3-4?

Wow, just noticed my post number. Maybe that's a sign for which tires to buy??

Have you considered a 255/85/16? You get the height that's equivalent to a 285/75/16, but it's going to a little narrower than your 265/75/16. The weight difference is in between the two sizes you mentioned depending on the tires.

i enjoy the looks of the 285's so any loss in mpg is worth it to me.

that said, on the street, i only lost about 1-2 mpg. but on the highway (if i drive 70-75), i lost about 4 mpg.

I have looked at the 255's but they are just too narrow for me. I am planning a camping trip next April and will be driving from West Virginia to Arizona. I'll be going thru Idaho and total mileage will be approx. 7500 miles. That's when the mpg difference will hurt.

yup, but your truck will look good doing it :)

it also depends on which 285's you get. for example, a heavy mud terrain will cause you to get less mpg than a lighter all terrain.

I think you might have answered your own question;). Based on what you've provided us, I think your best bet is to stick with 265/75/16.
