    Hey folks,

Today I had pepboys put on some BF Goodrich KO2s on my 2010. Everything is great so far, but I had one big question.

First though, they filled the tires to 60 PSI - which from what I've read was way too high. I went ahead and let air out till 40 PSI and intend to do the chalk test later when I get some more time.

When I started up my truck, I noticed that the TPMS light in my gauge cluster flashed for a minute then went solid. From my research, this indicates a failure in one or more of the TPMS units. I went back and asked the guy what was up, and he indicated that it was normal for your TPMS light to be on after new tires.

I agree that it might be normal for a TPMS light to show solid when you put on new tires, but the unit shouldn't fail, right?

I plan on driving it a few more days to see what happens, but I wanted to see if anybody had any golden advice for me / should I take it back immediately?

    Thanks guys!

have you tried hitting the tpms reset under the steering column? also the tpms sensors being 10+ years old the batteries are probably dead. I put regular valve stems in my wheels & put the sensors in the glove box. I'll put up with the light being constantly on.

I did indeed try resetting TPMS, however it remains solid no matter how long I hold it / whether I'm in park, etc. From what I read, if you have a tpms sensor fault, resetting won't work...

I also considered the batteries dying, but it would be awfully (in)convenient timing given that they were working when I dropped the truck off at 2 pm today and weren't when I picked it up at 5.

What I'm gathering, though, is that the tpms is absolutely to fault and I will likely need to get something done to fix it? I didn't expect the problem to just go away, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't making somebody do any more work than they had to.

    Thanks!

You need to lower your PSI to 32 and it will shut off

if they aren't broke, it may take a few key cycles to get the light to go away then.

They pumped them up to 60, reset the sensor to 60, then you lowered pressure to 40psi and your light is on because its thinking low pressure.

Reset the TPMS and if that doesnt do it they broke a sensor.

The light was on from the moment I took it out of the garage, before I even left the lot I went back in and asked about the light. I only lowered it to 40 (and now 32) after...

Unfortunately did not work... Lessened pressure to 32 or less on each tire and still getting the light.

That's what I'm feeling like right now... Guess I'll take it back tomorrow and b*tch about it haha

Here's a vid of what I was talking about if it helps anybody

In the future, always take picture of dash with engine running, and all four sides of vehicle before going in.

I rent heavy equipment and we take pictures out on rent and upon return, it removes arguments.

The tire pressure at 60 psi tells us everything we need to know

I think your TPMS light being "on" is just coincidence. After 10 years the battery(s) likely failed. The sensors just measure pressure, the ECU is programmed to trigger the light. (on my Ford Super Duty, you could program the TPMS light "low pressure warning" thresh hold via software) Toyota makes no provision for that kind of adjustment via Techstream. The sensor doesn't know 60psi from 20, it just transmits pressure data.
The tire dealer should be able to pinpoint which sensor(s) failed with his sensor tool.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
I've had shop break sensor but they told me it happened and replaced it. Bead snapped it when it came off rim.

Shop shouldn't have let you out with the light on. Addressing the tire light is one of their jobs. Unless they are the kind of people that sell a tire to someone when all the car really needed was a bit of air added.

Literally just went through this a week ago. Had new tires installed on my 07. Light was on immediately when I got in the truck to leave the tire shop. Went back inside, they re-learned all of the sensors. Light went off. Drove it the next day and the light flashed then remained on. Never had an issue before. Took it back to the tire shop. Owner said two TPMS sensors were broken during installation. Replaced them free of charge. So far, so good.

Most competent tire shops employ the following practice:
....."Always, “Test Before Touch”, to avoid liability issues with the customer. “Test Before Touch” is standard best practice that means if a vehicle comes into a facility with working TPMS, it must leave the facility with working TPMS."

I'll 2nd, 3rd and 4th everyone here - they broke sensors. They'll have a scan tool and can go around and see if each sensor is working.

And, FWIW, the batteries should be fine. The ones in my '09 are still working.
