New tires, Wildpeak AT4w 255/80r17, do they fit no lift on stock sport rims?

    Totally love the look.

Yes they do fit but it's close, this first set of pics shows them on my stock '23 with 1" wheel spacers, this gives a bit more of a wide fat look. The 1" spacers gives me about an ET4-5 so they wouldn't fit a zero offset rim without some trimming/reshaping of the inner fender, I think I will try removing the spacers (stock ET30) as I don't think any trimming will be necessary at all.

My future plan is a 2" lift and better shocks and springs.

1st pic the front is the wildpeak, rear is the stock Firestone 265/65r17. The wood block is to simulate the new tire height. Changing the rest of the tires now, 5 in total. I didn't take a pic of the front inner fender clearance as I thought I had lots, turns out it's maybe a hair more but that's it. spacers are coming off. Checked clearance with upper A-arms and it has lots.

Are these marked where they were made? During Covid these were coming from China. I’m looking at the 4’s myself.

I've got the AT3's, but with a 2" lift, no rubbing.

Don't know yet, changing all 5 tires myself, got them all mounted today but having issues seating the bead on the last two. Ran out of steam and will go at them again tomorrow. My next door neighbor has a balance machine and we're going to balance them Monday. They supposed to be real close to the AT3, maybe a hair less effective in the mud, but 15K (miles) longer on the warranty. Look cool with the big knobby lettering.

So they do fit but I did have to do a bit of minor trimming and slight heat and bend. Pretty sure i could have removed the 1" spacers and wouldn't of had to do that. Overall real happy, looks great, but I will be doing a 2" lift. Slightly harsher ride, but no different from going from summer tires to winters.

No guarantees that it won't rub with a 2" lift. Seems hit and miss with a lot of Taco's on this Forum.

    Good luck

You may not have to do any trimming…
Have you done the alignment and moved the lower control arms forward? This moves the wheel forward away from the rear wheel well. Also increases Caster.

I don't think I'll mess with the caster right now as it was also touching the front plastic during the turn. The slight bending of the plastic with a heat gun and a 2x4"between the inner fender and the tire has stopped the rubbing when turning. I also cut off the tip that you can see sticking out in my 4th pic, I think that was making the most noise in a sharp turn.
IIRC the AT4w has a slightly larger tread lug, so that will wear down over time.

Right now I'm debating which lift kit to buy, I'd like to also buy a front bumper and winch as we plan to do some major overlanding trips with this truck. I've already bought the R4T bumper caps, so I don't have to cut up my OE bumper and I'm thinking of doing the same for the flares.
I guess I'll have to always carry some kind of load as the camper I plan to build with full kit will be in the 1000lbs territory.

So would you chaps recommend the mod upper A-arms? I take it that then I could adjust my caster better and I'd have no issue with rubbing at the rear of the front fenders. Doesn't running less caster hurt high speed stability?

You might like to consider a different tack in choosing a lift at this time. You say you are going to add a 1,000lb camper, winch and bumper... and, and, and... who knows what down the road. At which time I'll bet you will already be way over the Tacoma's maximum rated payload and what most of the off-the-shelf-lift kits consider "normal".

I have the same type of plans but I'm going to add all my stuff to the vehicle before choosing a suspension and base my choice off whatever my truck weighs when I complete my build and choose my spare parts and tools to load onto the truck.

As far as your plans, the only function item I'd like to add is to get a rear bumper as well - that plastic thing is just waiting for an obstacle.

    Just some food for thought.

Agreed, although I'm going to do my best to keep things light weight and minimalistic I do want to collect all the gear before buying a suspension. For now I've ordered a 2" spacer just to level the truck in the short term.

I also am thinking of not going too crazy as I have a Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4x4, 6 ton truck that I want to make into overlander, but that's going to take 2-4 years and I want to use the Taco in the meantime and as a short trip camper.

That is awesome. Good on you!

I mount my bike tires and use Slime to balance. I did one tires on my lightweight wheel holder. It was not fun.

I'm dreaming of a set of beadlocks to make changes at home a lot easier.

So I'm just using a cheap HF/Princess Auto manual tire changer that I modified like in the YT link below. Breaking the bead and removal was easy, installing was a bit harder but not overly difficult. I used a pro lube I got off of Amazon, I also had to make a 106mm cone (out of an old VW cam gear) on my lathe as these rims have a huge center hole. Seating the bead was a beotch, tried the strap, got one on, no luck that way after that. Tried starer fluid but it must be weaker now as no boom. Then I leaned the tires at a 45 and from the bottom used a couple of 2-3 second bursts of lighter butane and a long BBQ lighter, boom-boom-boom-boom less that 5 minutes they were all seated. I don't recommend this method but it worked for me. Destroyed the tip on 2 lighters, so you definitely want a long BBQ lighter, lol.
My buddy's balancer lock down wouldn't fit the big hole so I just took them to a local tire shop, they didn't need a lot of weights.
BTW I've also seen 4x4 guys do another mod so the changer fits a trailer receiver and they can change tires in the field.

BTW this setup will NOT remove old tires that are as hard as hockey pucks.

This tire size is awesome! I have a few fairly steep hills here and I hated how the transmission would hunt for gears with the stock size tires, now it goes solidly into gear with no more hunting. Acceleration also feels smoother and more responsive.
