Yes, it's cheaper, but it can be defeated and bypassed by a knowledgeable auto thief. The Ravelco anti theft device can't be defeated or bypassed in any way.

I like the idea of a tablet. easy to see.. but wont I have to pay a monthly service fee to have internet access on it when I am not in my apartment? (i used to be up to date with all this stuff..but life happend and now i am learning ) I appreciate everyones help.

my friend who has an old camper van just told me about this phone 19.99 and it uses verizon network so when he is up in no cal he has good connection. the phone is 19.99 and the monthly charge is only $40 bucks.

at this point living in the bay area I need to be mindful as I can around finances. esp getting older and having health issues. I used to be able to alot of my income on fun and toys (was photography most my life) but now it seems just living here and out of pocket medical costs took away alot of the fun.

I like the idea of the Ravelco. - i wonder if i can figure out how to install it? i like challenges..but sometimes health crap gets in the way and i can be in the middle of a project and have to stop for weeks or months. part of lifes interesting adventure.

Torque connects to the obdII dongle via the dongle's wifi transmission or bluetooth transmission....depends on which one you get. On mine it connects via wifi. You don't have to have internet on your tablet, just have to be able to turn wifi on for it to connect. Oh and GPS...mine requires gps to be on

what do you all think of something like this ? it would be the quickest and easiest (since i dont have an android or iOS currently) to use to make sure I dont have a problem with the taco engine over heating.. since i have only had it for a week I have no idea what is working and what isn't . I have not seen any leaks.
    thanks

Concerning your tablet & Internet use: Install a VPN on your tablet & cellphone. It will help protect your privacy. You can use public Wi-Fi like McDonald's & Starbucks for free Internet access in the general public. There are other places that free Wi-Fi is available. You just have to ask one of the employees for the password if you're a customer. There are different cellphone provider services that can provide a monthly plan for you, depending on your phone calls/text messages/data usage. You can also check out Skype as a ways to communicate online with a camera on your laptop computer or tablet.

If you intend to travel out into areas with no cellphone coverage or data, you might want to consider a satellite phone and mobile Wi-Fi onboard your vehicle. I will try to find the link to the onboard Wi-Fi that I was looking at.

Living in Bay Area: Being a resident of this area myself, I can agree with you about the high cost of housing/rent/cost of living in the Bay Area. You'll find that you'll have to budget your money wisely to save up to buy the things that you may need or want for your truck. Those of us who live in this area feel your pain!

Ravelco anti-theft device: This device can only be installed by a certified Ravelco technician, not by you. The Ravelco is auto thief proof and is recommended by law enforcement agencies for a reason. The thief can break into your vehicle, disarm your alarm, take what they want, damage your ignition/interior in an attempt to hotwire your vehicle, but if you have a Ravelco installed, they won't be able to hotwire your vehicle & drive off with your vehicle. They would have to end up pushing your vehicle out of your driveway/parking spot to get it to move.
