Hey all. So I'm new on the scene. I just bought my first real 4x4 (my last being in college 18 years ago. Ford Bronco II). I lurked on this site for about 4 months before I bought my TRD OR. I've noticed a few threads where someone wants some info on lifts but doesn't necessarily Off Road. Poor guys were skewered. Called poser and basically told that all they do is cruise around the mall (because everyone hangs out st the mall in 2016).

At any rate, I hope that attitude is the exception and not the norm. First, everyone has to start somewhere. Second, not everyone has your same passion.

I frequent design forums (I create merchandise in the imusic and sports industry) and music forums (I play guitar and am in a band) and while I notice the same attitude sometimes toward newcomers, I see this quite a bit more here.

Is this place mainly for the hardcore off-roading crowd? I guess I'm seeing a mixed response as to whether occasional off roaders or (gasp!) people who never take their truck off pavement are welcome.

This isn't a troll thread. This is my observation after sitting in the shadows for a few months.

    I'm genuinely curious.

Regardless, I'm Geoff from Cleveland. I will probably only OR a few times a year but I like the looks of a lifted Toyota and wanted one ever since I saw 'Back To The Future' as a child.

Hey Geoff, welcome. I would say people around here are very helpful, and pretty nice for the most part. Every group has a few bad apples, but I haven't come across any yet. It seems to me that the people that don't take the time to use the search function are the ones that get skewered. If you cannot find the answers, or have something new to add, then you will pretty much only be met with encouragement and assistance. Not everyone here is hardcore off-road. It is a mix of everything. Congrats on the new truck, and welcome back to the world of 4x4.

I hardly off-road at all. If you have a thick skin around here and learn how to take a hit you'll be just fine

It's just macho alfa male bull shit. Those people are every where. Most of these people who like off roading so much don't have allot of trees and live in more ideal environments and terrains.

Man I had a 4x4 took it off road put scratches and dents in it. By the time it was 2 years old it looked pretty rough. Unless you live in a nice open area like AZ I feel it's pretty overrated and ages the appearance of your truck.

I like to think of it much like the barbershop scene in Gran Torino, except many here lack the skill to enhance the banter. Then, of course you have a few of those painfully transparent insecure types who think internet toughness is masking it.

I notice much of the same things you do, and think we can most attribute the behavior to the sheer volume of people who pass through here. Other forums that I belong to, ones that are amiable ... tend to have fewer regular contributors.

While this site isn't completely bereft of technical information, it certainly isn't the core of it (design, music theory, etc ... generally require a great deal of technical knowledge). This isn't going to help the average IQ here.

welcome to TW, in my short time I have figured out how to be ok. 1st- don't tell someone they are wrong and then use common sense to prove it. 2- don't ask a question about something you don't know. 3-post lots of pictures of things to distract the riff raff.

I have found great info here, but you do need to wade through the piles of shit to get it sometimes.

Yeah, I'd be down with some trail riding but that's about it. We go to the Outer Banks every year so it will be fun to drive on the beaches. I definitely don't want to beat the shit out of a brand new truck just for fun, though.

Welcome and you are absolutely right, not sure why there are so many like that here. Maybe they are younger, insecure guys just following others trying to sound "cool and tough".

But, the "ignore" button is your friend. Click on the poster name, then hit ignore and that one will continue to write for himself.

Maybe, they'll eventually grow up and put their efforts towards more important tasks. Also, do the same thing for those wannabe members of the "do your search" patrol. I did.

well if you bought a 3rd gen you'll fit right in.
seems more like 95% are mall crawlers and 5% actually wheel lol.
So if you just like the look it seems the norm with 3rd gens.

    Welcome to the site.
