New to me 95 - vacuum line question

    95 Tacoma, 100k miles, 4wd xtracab v6.

    Bought it from the original owner. He was a tinkerer and I'm trying to get it back to stock (more or less).

    First - I swapped the k&n for the stock intake. (yes I cleaned the MAF). I found homes for all the vacuum hoses but I have one port on the air box with no home... See the middle of this pic with the vacuum cap.
    Any ideas?


    Second: what's this little piece of flacid hose on the coolant reservoir? Is this a factory thing?

    Third: what is this catch can doing?? Smells like oil...How was the factory crankcase breather set up, and why mod it?

    Omg I can't believe how clean that is. Nice buy man. The first little L shaped hose is OEM and in the right place. It's for directing the coolant away if it gets over pressurized. The catch can is interesting. I can't tell where it's pulling that oil from. You'd think it's pulled from the crankcase, also for excessive pressure. I wonder why he felt the need to put that there? There's always a reason, it's just the figuring out if it's a valid reason, and also if it's a valid fix. I don't believe it's OEM, so you're on the right track of wanting to get it back to original.
    Good call on going back to stock air filter and housing.

    Suspension, 33s, some armor... Rust, Gray wire and 2Low, and more. T4r is stock.
    That is where the vacuum system connects to the intake. It should have a vacuum line running from there over to where that catch can is. It looks like the PO completely redid the vacuum system to include the catch can. I think some guys have had trouble with the oil dirtying up the intake. I would start by comparing to someone with a stock vacuum setup for a pre 2000. I'd show you pictures of mine but I have an 01 and there are some differences I think...

    I have the FSM but have not dug in.

    Anyone have a pic of the factory vacuum layout for a 95 thru...?? 98?

    Anyone have some pics of the vacuum setup?

    Google was no help, FSM not helpful either strangely.

    Toytec coilovers. Height adjustable Bilstein's. 265/75/16 MT. TRD wheels. Rebuilt r150f. Marlin clutch kit. All kinds of new parts...
    Airbox open vacuum hose connects to the EVAP canister ( believe that's what it's called) on the other side of the engine. Must be venting to atmosphere maybe? The catch can might be for the PSV that hooked to the intake hose. I've heard of people doing that to keep the intake track clean.

    In some pics I see two cannisters on the driver's side. In my truck I have only one. Could the 2nd cannister be for a cal emissions thing?

    I have not driven the truck since going back to stock intake...Going to try tomorrow, hopefully no MIL.

    Mystery possibly solved.

    Looks like it's the 3rz engine, cal emissions.

    The blue lines this guy used make it easy to spot... the line that runs from the airbox routs across the top of the engine over to the fresh air intake on the charcoal canister.

    You obviously don't have the same charcoal canister. I don't think the one in your truck is stock but I could be wrong. Like I said before. The older 5VZ-FE was a bit different.

    cxr turbo, fic6, methanol injection, king coilovers, jba uca, skyjacker leafs, rear 12" 5125s, no-slip rear locker, 35" grabber x3, magnaflow muffler, retrofit headlights, trans cooler, bed lined exterior, etc...
    Catch can is for front diff. Some ppl have problems with excess oil coming out of breather.


    The L shaped hose out of the overflow is just a vent to allow expansion

    To avoid confusion anything before the throttle body isnt a vacuum line. Just a vent/breather.

    On the 2RZ that vacuum/air port on the air cleaner has a cap on it, at least for 95-96. I think it depends on if you have one or two canisters for the EVAP. The 3RZ had that hose attached to a pipe going along the top of the radiator. The 2RZ doesn't have that. I don't know about the V6.

    You just need to figure out if your engine was supposed to have it or if it was capped off. Do you have the vacuum diagram sticker on the underside of the hood?

    That cap if you need it would be 90339-09003 I believe. You can probably find a generic rubber cap at a local store.

    The hose on the coolant reservoir is for overflow, like someone else said. As the engine heats up, excess coolant flows into the reservoir tank, and when the engine cools it sucks the coolant back into the radiator from the hose extending down into it. That little hose allows the air pressure to escape from the reservoir and excess coolant if it overflows for some reason.

    Thanks for the replies gents.

    I capped it with a vacuum cap I had handy and drove into work. The truck ran better and quieter than I remember, but maybe that was just mental because of the oil/filter change and Maf cleaning.

    Anyway I'm just gonna roll with it!

    I'll dig into that catch can a bit later, I do have a major service planned for the spring, full fluid change out. My prevailing thought here is: it ain't broke, don't fix.

    Also my cannister has Toyota part #s on it...So I think it's stock, or at least, a Toyota part.

    I can't find that air line anywhere in the v6 portion of the FSM.
