New to Toyota altogether, recently bought a 2019 TRD Off-Road with 21k miles. Read/learned a lot on this board already, but had a question about the engine and gas pedal specifically. I have the V6 (not sure if it comes in anything else), but it's really loud. It's not loud in a something is wrong way or making any funny noises, just when accelerating the engine is loud. Is that normal? Secondly, my gas pedal is very touchy, it needs almost no pressure to take off from a dead stop. Curious if that's also normal? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Noise is normal, I don’t think the accelerator response is wildly different from any other vehicles I’ve driven.

    welcome!

if you need it louder you can mess around with the exhaust.

or get a cold air intake designed to be more noisy.

    Welcome aboard!

Sounds pretty normal, I just turned 22k with my 2020, and its always been that way. You stab the go pedal, prepare for some tire roasting, and loud screeching.

Engine is definitely louder in this truck than many other trucks I have owned. You learn to deal with it. As for the throttle response, I thought the factory tune was way too soft so when I got the KDMax tune, I opted for the aggressive tip in. Now I can hear my throttle body suck air when I lightly touch the go pedal and it will scoot. I have an AT and I wheel it a bit so riding the brake is needed on trails but on the street, I don't roast tires at all.

you might have a tune on the engine. KDMaxx I think is the name... and the one I bought had this tune on it and it lurches forward like I dropped the clutch... do not like...

Check back with whomever you bought the truck from to see if they added a Tuning kit. I added KDMax tune and the accelerator is definitely much more sensitive than it was while stock.

Does it have a TRD or some aftermarket exhaust on it?

Does it have a TRD or some aftermarket air intake on it?

Opening the hood for a visual exam as well as a look under the truck will be required to answer those Qs.

I purchased it from a car dealer, so I don't think that option would work. Is there any other way to tell if a tuning kit was added? Perhaps something I can look for or a mechanic can look for?

The noise you're hearing might be the fan. It's mechanical, so the faster the engine spins, the faster it spins. Especially down low at takeoff, it makes some noise.

As for the giving it barely any gas and it taking off, you probably have a tune. The factory tune is not like that at all, it takes significant pedal input to get rolling or in other words, the stock tune has a pretty padded throttle response.

As I understand it, to tell if it's tuned, someone with VF Tuning software could hook up to it and try to read the ECM. If it's still stock, they'll be able to read it. If it's not, they won't.

I would describe the stock gas pedal response as "normal" to "sluggish" compared to other vehicles. If it's very sensitive I'd say you have a tune with the aggressive tip-in option.

I have a tune on mine, with the "lite" tip in, and it's still more sensitive than stock and most other vehicles. I'm hoping for a "linear" tip in option that's even less touchy on future tunes.

Thanks for the info - googling the tune possibility, it sounds like the dealer could reflash it back to stock settings? Does that sound accurate?

Not sure about that, I think if they do an update on techstream, it would put it back to stock, but there may not be an update available. If you have somebody nearby who does tuning, they can flash you back to stock if it is tuned. Of course some money will be involved for their time, whoever you go through.

You can send KDMaxx, or OTT VIN number and they can check to see if it's in their data base for a tune.
