Back in March I purchased a 2004 V6 Prerunner 2wd. I have recently put some 265/17's on her and seem to have suffered some gas mileage. Any tips from you veterans on how I can get my girl back up to the low 20's? Thanks in advance.

What size tire did you put on exactly? Interesting you have 17's because only 2nd gens came stock with 17" wheels. What wheels do you have? How low has your mileage dropped and what trans do you have? If you only dropped a mpg or so it's probably going to stay that way. I've changed tires from 245/75r16's to 265/70's changed wheels (to lighter alloys from stock steelies), added spacers, take them off, and lifted my truck and haven't experienced too drastic of a change in mileage - I still get 18-20 at the pump.

265/? how tall are they. Go back to stock tire / wheel size for one.
Make sure your tires are fully inflated at all times.
Be light with your foot (biggest gas saver).
there are no super secrets on MPGs, and I wouldn't expect low 20s for the v6 engine with these trucks unless all highway and 65 and under. Best I've done, albeit on the 3.4L 4x4 supercharged, was 20.8 (100% highway). I average with my larger tires and winter blend gas around 16.5 and 18 in the summer.

Have you compensated for speedo/odo error with the new tires? That will improve your calculations. Not to where it was, but better than you think it is.

If MPG is critical, you really should consider another vehicle. 'Cause these things aren't made for that. Just like most any truck.

On my prerunner, I get 16.5 mpg with stock 16".but I drive in the bay area. That's mixed freeway/city

Hell, I ended up with 60 buck ditch light brackets.work great tho. Makes running fire trails fun. Too bad the lights only cost a 1/3 of the brackets.

Thanks guys, I have to admit I took the seller's word saying that it got low 20's and was a bit surprised after driving it for a while. My foot does tend to get a little heavy from time to time as I have a lot on my plate. Nonetheless I'm loving my Taco and plan to run her till there's nothing left. A friend of mine suggested cold air intake and a new muffler that's a bit more throat...? I have lots to learn and am open to all perspectives. Also, why's it so damn hard to find a Haynes manual for these things?

Guess their owners still have them in their garages and are still wrenching on their Tacomas. :notsure: @mechanicjon can hook you up with a PDF version of the FSM from a 2000 that gives you the majority of repairs for major components.

Stay away from cold air intake's. The stock one is better.

You should try replacing your spark plugs, I used to get around 13-15 mpg city and I changed my plugs. That quickly shot up to 22ish mpg.
