So after saying I'd buy one for months now I finally bought my very 1st tacoma. An SR5 V6 with Tow. Black. Double cab. The dream for me at least. But after reading about the transmission issues I was wondering if someone could tell me how to check the fluid without special tools. Thanks in advanced.

Welcome!!! I'm new as well. There is a thread around here somewhere outlining the procedure to check it. If I recall the basic concept is get the tranny to temp, remove the fill lug, then pump in fluid till it starts to spew it back at you...don't take my word on that thou. Should be easy to find utilizing the search function.

That sounds about right to me, without guessing the temp. Can anyone confirm if it's that simple?? Also I'm on my cell phone so navigating through the search menu isn't that easy.

Or does anyone have an idea how long it would take to get to the right temperature?

I timed mine. With ambient air temps in the low 70s it took mine about 8 minutes to get to temp and about another 5 minutes before it exceeded the upper limit. But don't use these figures to test it without following the procedure. You need to use the procedure because, in test mode, it controls the rpm. Without that, my guess is that rpm fluctuations may cause fluid level variations that could cause you not to get the proper level.
