Guys, this is my first Tacoma. I bought this truck for my daily driver. Love the truck so far except for the motor noise. Really it sounds like the truck has a exhaust leak when accelorating. I noticed this with the others I test drove. To the point that I alost did not buy? Am I crazy or do others here this? Can anything be done??

It could be anything really. It kind of depends on your sensitivity I guess. I would like to hear a video/ audio recording of the noise. If you have a leak then it is probably at the exhaust manifold gasket.

It's called the Tacoma tick. Just get used to it. There's a write up on here that supposedly reduces the noise but it will never go away.

I'm definitely taking it back to dealer. Honestly it sounds like old tired motor. I've had a exhaust manifold leak in on my old Chevy Trailblazer. My Tacoma sounds just like it did. I test drove other new Tacoma's though and they had the same noise to me. I will try to record it with my phone.

What year is your truck? I have a 2009 and it's nice and quiet except for the ticking sound at idle.

It's an emissions solenoid called a VSV or vacuum switching valve. The ticking you are hearing is the valve rapidly opening and closing. Which means it's doing it's job. Its bolted to the drivers side top of the engine and has a connector and 2 vacuum hoses. I've just gotten used to the noise and don't even hear it anymore.

I did a search and tried to find info for you but I couldn't find anything quickly. :(

It's normal. All the Tacoma do it well at least the 2nd gen. I have an 05 and I test drove a '11 Tacoma Tx pro and It sounds the same just not as loud as my 05.

There is a mod to make it quiter in the cheap mod section at the top of the page. I believe it was by tcbob.

It doesn't bother me but I know its there I have windows up, ac on, music going most of the time so that drowns any odd noises out. Trick I learned from my jeep buddie.

Try the "turn up your radio mod". It got rid of the noise for me. :D

The Shim under bucket design is only true for V6 engines, not the 2.7L four cylinder (2TR).

Not sure which engine the OP has in his 2011, but the 4 cylinder has a plethora of sounds too, including injectors and EVAP valve. Most notably the exhaust gases flowing through the giant exhaust manifold sounds like a V8 engine in a 1985 Chevy Custom Deluxe pickup.

While it doesn't completely eliminate the ticking, doing the rubber washer mod on the VSV does help quiet the noise down. I can't find the writeup, but the pictures for the finished product are in the last post of my build page.

Ask chris4x4, he did a writeup on the rubber washer, as well as a video.
