Hello Tacoma World. I was a Subaru guy for years, always loved off road. built some fast cars, and raced. Did a lot of rally and what not. Joined the Air Force late in life at 26 and decided to put away the toys.... well kinda.... Sold all my old cars and picked up a 2017 Tacoma TRD off road long bed.

I purchased the Tacoma TRD because I need a reliable midsize truck for moving, commute, and fun. I moved across the country with this bad boy. Texas to Oregon to Arkansas. Truck did amazing. we drove 500mile/7ish hour days going an avg 75mph with maybe a break every 2 hours. Mountain passes and all.

She towed 5k worth of weight the whole way avging around 10-12mpg. I was very impressed. Plenty of power with ECT and sport on and not bad going down hills. May have hit 80-90 MPH passing some cars and the truck was fine!

She is at 10k miles and about to get her 2nd oil change. Got her first oil change at 5,000 moving from Texas-Oregon. The truck mainly has 8,000 towing miles and never had an issue!

I'm loving the Taco, hopefully she wont be the last! Military gets a sweet deal in texas so I was able to get the 125k Service and 175k warranty plan for nothing. Almost thinking a TRD Tundra once I hit that mark.

Any advice for a new taco driver? Any suggested mods?

The truck has already been through 13 states!

    -Nick

Just drive and it enjoy it. No mods needed. Asking people on here what mods are suggested is opening a can of worms. You'll get suggestions for things you absolutely don't need and drop thousands of $$$. Once you think you need a mod add as you go. Enjoy!!!

Do you feel it lacks in certain areas? From what you wrote, it seems like it covered everything you threw at it. What more can you ask for?

Enjoy the truck, you can Mod to fit your needs and wallet. Pro Grilles, better tires, Sliders and Skid Plates are popular mods.

Like what others have said, depends what you will be doing with your truck for mods. Just make sure you don't go spending thousands on something you don't need. If you plan to use it for camping/hunting since you are in Arkansas (I go up there time to time for camping trips, I'm stationed in Louisiana), I would get lights (led bar lights, ditch lights, etc. whatever you want) since stock headlights are pretty dim.

My build is for camping and hunting in areas like Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Arizona (sand dune camping is the best!). I have already spent about 2-3k (I have not installed everything yet since I have been busy) just trying to get it off road worthy around my part of town and I still haven't bought new tires yet!
