New Toyo Open Country A/T III tire

From what I can tell on mine, the SL sidewalls are the same. The website says there are 2 sidewalls in all sizes. I beg to differ.

However, these tires are smooth, and no road noise to speak of (if you're worried ab that). Now if they'll get the mileage that my AT2s got (73,xxx).

Overall, I'm please with the purchase.

 

As I've had the Toyo ATIII's installed during this covid 19 haven't put a lot of miles on them but so far they get a 10.

So how big of a difference is the ride quality from an SL to an E rated tire?

What pressures are everyone having the most luck with for even wear on these new at3's? I'm experimenting with 29psi. 35psi seemed to high.

If i got 285/70/17 for my truck would that be required? or? What’s the reason for regearing?

 

I'm running 35 and all is well. I will see over time.

 

He said 285/75r17 not 285/70r17 so 34s not 33s. From what I’ve been reading jumping up to the 34s is where regearing becomes a good idea.

I REALLY want the 34s but unsure if it’s worth the added cost of regearing since this is still my DD.

If you guys do your research on re-gearing.. the Tacoma’s were never geared correctly.. 6 speed transmission will never see 6 speeds unless your going down hill at 80mph ... re-gearing your Tacoma’s probably should be a first mod after initial purchase.. but hard to justify such an expensive mod... if you plan on keeping your rig for a long time.. then maybe a good idea.. just some food for thought

 

I cruise at 70mph in 6th gear all the time. Sure it downshifts on inclines but you’re statement is false. It’s geared tall for fuel economy, but it is not geared incorrectly.

 

Agreed. My truck (new to me, 5 speed) has 31.7" tall tires, and it'll be in the gear shop soon. It's just not geared low enough. Neither was my last one.

I have every intention of regearing eventually but trying to wait until I can go up to 35s which doesn’t make sense on my DD right now. Planning to wear through a set of 33s and then go big...

anyway back to toyo aT3s! Not trying to derail this and start a gearing debate.

 

Yeah don’t mean to get off subject about re-gearing.. so after much price hassling between American Tires & American Tire Depot.. letting both of em fight for my business.. Tire depot is giving me E rated set for $811 includes road hazard out da door.. oppose to P metric for $790 out da door

 

I'm in the same boat with my 4runner. I was very close to ordering the 285/75/17's (~34"), but I wasn't ready for the cutting. I got the 285/70's (~33") and I'm happy with the decision. In a few years, I'm thinking I might regear and go 35"s and get out the sawzall!

I got to try them in gravel, sand, dirt, and some mild off-roading this weekend. They felt great, and stuck to everything without airing down. I think these are going to be great tires!

I also managed to get about 18 MPG (based on odometer) in mixed highway/city/trail driving, which is surprising since these tires are an inch taller than stock and 55#.

 

Thanks.. I’m so ready.. installing tomorrow then gonna hit some trails this next weekend w some other Taco owners.. what PSI should I run on these for everyday use oppose to off-road use?

 

I used some website to calculate, and it wound up at 38 for my 4runner. Which is weird since these are bigger tires and the stock SL's are supposed to be run at 32.

It's all based on load range and the vehicle's GVWR and some crazy math I don't understand. But, I ran C rated KO2's at 35 for 29K and they wore perfectly. So, basically I don't know.
