New Toyo Open Country A/T III tire

Toyos are top-tier for sure, I think they make Nittos too. Goodyear, the saying goes, "Only good for 1 year". Goodyear also got political with their business practices and I hate companies who do that. I've had awesome luck with BFG's too. I had a pair of their gSport Comp II's on my WRX and they were awesome tires for the price, when put up against Michelin PS4's and other higher-end tires. I was going to go with the K02's on my truck, and they would have been about 5lbs less per tire, but I went with the Toyos. Mostly due to the fact that while I like the sidewall look of the K02, I feel like the Toyo are a much better tire in the winter and rain conditions, and as an E load, wasn't that much heavier than the K02. The Falkens are heavy tires, even in XL load they weigh as much as a K02 in C load, idk why they're so heavy.

I also may be bias, but I think the Toyo AT3 with the aggressive sidewall looks the best. K02's look good too, but almost like they're trying too hard. Falkens sidewall is ugly to me, the Nitto Ridge Grapplers and Toyo R/T Trail are also very good looking tires.

 

They are good in the rain. I’d say the XL/SL and P-metric metric versions are “very good” and the LT models are “good.” The difference is siping, tread depth, and rubber compound. Id like to have the type of tread you got to get better wet traction back, though I like the C LTs I currently run for the durability. So ultimately it probably comes down to what wheel I run. If I go back to OR, then P-metric, if I stay with the sports I’ll probably go with the larger size 265/70R17 because they have a load C. I guess what I’m saying is despite the traction being slightly less I’d likely choose for C’s for the durability. I like that unless it’s a really long nail, a nail doesn’t typically puncture them and they are super sturdy on cornering. But I’ve got a while to make my decision so we’ll see.

Alright, So I just spent a good part of the day in heavy rain running errands in town and on the highway and man, these Toyo tires handle SOOOO much better than the stock Goodyears.
No more wheel spin when starting up steep hills, handles corners with more confidence. In a word, Surefooted!
Truck still feels peppy as well, despite each tire weighing 3 lbs more than stock. That weight is probably negligible anyway.
I haven't noticed any road noise until about 80kph. and then just a bit of a hum at higher speeds. no steering wheel vibration either.
And of course, they look good!
Very happy with these tires.

 

As I posted in the “what have you done to your 3rd gen” thread, I recently decided to buy some off-road 16’s. Main motivation for that was wanting the truck to be “original” again (it never had these wheels when I bought it). I think I like the look of the Sport wheels better, but I wanted to go back to smaller stock size tires and maintain some rubber. So the OR wheels fit the bill.

As you've come from a 17 inch wheel, do you notice a difference in the ride with more sidewall on these Toyos?

 

These are definitely the softest version I’ve ran yet and they handle as such. Not that that’s a bad thing, but they are definitely not as sporty or responsive as the other two were. I ran the 265/65R17 XLs first, which I really liked. They handled super nicely, very responsive, great braking and acceleration, cornering you didn’t feel any roll or anything. I ran those at 31 psi after doing the conversion based on the stock tires and pressure.

The LT255/75R17 were somewhat stiff, as expected due to the being LT with a heavier/thicker carcass and requiring more pressure to maintain proper inflation. I kept those at 37 psi. They handled extremely well, but being heavy and larger they were definitely different to drive. Not as good traction in the wet due to LT with different rubber compound and less siping. Easy to spin in 1st from a stoplight/sign.

So far these new tires corner the worst, but that’s not to say they’re bad. They’re a softer load tire with a larger sidewall, it’s to be expected. I am now running them at 27 psi after doing the conversion, but they started out at 35 from Discount and I dropped them to 30 initially. No real changes in behavior from the different pressures. They do brake very nicely, feeling the tread is like sandpaper. Very sticky rubber. They should be good tires and I don’t regret my choice. They are just not the same sporty option I had before.

I could have stuck with the Sport wheels and 265/65, but it just felt kind of weird/wrong on an offroad trim. They didn’t look like off-road worthy tires at all, so it felt kind of lame.

They did look good in general though and if I had a Sport trim, those are probably what I’d run long term. I will probably hang onto the Sport wheels just because nobody will give much $ for them. That way I can switch it up if I want.

My experience so far has been that the Toyos, 265/70/R16 are considerably better than the stock Goodyears. Those things did not corner well, more body roll, and a softer ride, and not a lot of grip in the rain.
The SL Toyos are just a bit more firm, and much better in wet weather.
I was considering going up a size, 265 75 R16, but I think In the future if I go that route, Ill move up to a 17 inch wheel with similar offset to stock trail edition ( -4 to 0 ) with 265 70 r17.

 

Yeah, I’m happy with any of the options really. Just didn’t want the 1.5” larger tires anymore because I could feel them in the acceleration. These certainly are not bad at all on cornering or anything else, they are just softer than what I’ve been used to for the entire time I’ve had this truck. They do seem like the typical great Toyo quality and should be a good tire choice long term.

I did think I had some balancing issues initially but that turned out to be just an odd feeling initially that wears off in the first hundred miles or so. All smooth now and I have about 100 miles on them. Maybe just some slight unevenness in the tread from manufacturing that needed to even itself out, not sure.

 

LT285/70R17 C load rating mounted today. Only a few miles on them but they are much quieter than the Falkens and the ridge is a bit more compliant. Long trip to the mountains tomorrow with a call for snow. I’m excited to see how they perform.





Previously on LT275/70R17 Falken Wildpeak A/T3W C rated for 30k miles. Had a few E rated 285/75R16 and 265/75E16 E rated prior and they were way too rough for a light truck IMO. In fact, the C rated are a bit stiff without the Black Diamond cover and storage box and Yakima Rack.

Trying to decide between these and the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss for my next tires. I'm currently on 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak at3w SL and they have been great, I just never really liked they way they look lol

I'd probably have to get the C load Toyos as the SL sidewall is just a little too modest for an AT tire imo.

The Mickey Thompson is a bit more of a question mark, not as many people have them but everyone that does seems to love them. I'd get the SL version with them cause the only other option is E load unfortunately.

 

Keep us updaged on your wear and milage. My P rated tires didn't last as long as I exprcted...

 

What pressure were you running in them? Stock setup or aftermarket wheels, lift, etc? I’ve seen you talk about this a lot and yours did wear out fast but I don’t think that’s the norm.

I did have a set of XL rated before which have the same 13/32 passenger type tread with the stickier rubber. I had around 22K on them and they still had 8/32 and had been there for a while, so they seemed okay to me.

That said, this set is disappointing me. I had initial balance issues. Went back a few days later and they said whoever did the right side did a very poor job because they were way out of balance. One of them had 3 long clip ons in a row on the back of the wheel. The rebalance that day made it a lot better but I still get an intermittent shaking at highway speed. I’m going back today for them to look at them again but I think I’m going to end up swapping to 265/75.

 

Andddd again, another tire swap. This time 265/75R16. As a courtesy, the road force balanced them and didn’t charge me for swapping to larger size which cost $4 more per tire. They did charge for the labor…

End result is these are buttery smooth. No highway issues whatsoever. They steer easier at low speed which I like, and they ride firmer probably due to the 115 vs 111 load rating. 28 psi per the tire calculator.

Interestingly enough, they are from the Serbia plant. Nobody on this thread has mentioned Serbia in regards to this size. Hopefully, this means that the tire recipe for 265/75R16 was changed a bit and they won’t wear early like @jaymac10 tires did. Time will tell.

I have a 21 off road double cab. I'm thinking of getting the 16 inch matte black TRD wheels and Toyo open country at3s LT265/75R16.
Any concerns?
Later this summer I'm thinking of upgrading to the Bilstein 6112 and 5160.

 

No concerns, those should work great with no rubbing. 36 psi will be ideal on those to maintain stock load.

Just did a highway drive at 130km with the new Toyo OpenCountry at3s. SL 265 70 r16, in wet weather. A bit of road noise at 130, but silky smooth otherwise. I think next time I will go up a tire size though. might be worth noting, my tires were made in Japan.
