Shift it over to “sport mode”. I’m so doing, you can “shift” up or down, but this really just limits the highest gear it will shift into. So s4 will shift through gears 1-4, kicking out your overdrives. S5 will shift up to 5th, etc.

Aside from better rust prevention, what else are you looking for? If there aren’t features or comforts you want and you’re otherwise content with your 2nd gen, it seems like a fraction of the money could go a really long way in buffing up the rust prevention on your current ride.

Pull back to D and push lever to left. Then push lever forward or back to lock out gears not to be used.

So, once done as you state, the transmission will continue to shift through 1-4 as normal? Sorry, I am just a little confused about the two ODs (5 an 6).

Thanks everyone. I am going to do a detail undercarriage inspection (again!) on my 06. If all is looking decent I am going to do yet another rust proofing/treatment, touch up and repair any rust areas as applicable. And then spend the near $1,600 for an aluminum front bumper, go steel on the rear and a few other additional mods. My truck is already lifted and has aftermarket arms.

Then buy a new BRZ or GR86 ;). Which is back to my original plan, drive the 06 until it falls apart, just not from rust please. But if I do not like what I find underneath, well, I do not know, maybe get a new Tacoma that being the reason for this thread :( .

I just did a road trip through Colorado with my wife. We hit some of the parks, monuments and did some light trail exploring and day hiking. We were run out by the winter storm. The old Taco acquitted itself well with the snow as always. A full size truck just could not do what we do without being cumbersome or even impossible. The Taco of any year is a supreme off-roader! But, while out there, every time we visit Colorado, I am impressed with the number of Tacos on the road and trail from stock to highly modded. Everyone in Colorado either has a Tacoma or if not then a Subaru ;) and if not those some sort of Jeep, usually a Wrangler of course. I saw very few, maybe three, Canyons and no Colorados either.

My 18 already has rusty clamps under the hood. Like they’re still solid, but the mfs are rusty and showing the early phases of corrosion. Been a NY truck it’s whole life. I didn’t get it until this year. PO never washed it.

rest of the truck is still solid outside of a few hidden crevices that have surface rust. I have friends with much older, higher mileage Toyotas with not even a quarter of the rust that’s on my 2018. The metal on these 3rd gen trucks is inferior.
