Well I hope their strike fund is well funded....strikes at 3 different manufactures at once....nuts. If anything it will help the manufactures get rid of a lot of stock that has been building up over the last few months but i figure it will give them an excuse to keep prices high. Possibly curb any incentives or rebates going in to 2024.

Heard that was one reason they chose not to do full strikes. Doesn’t make much sense , as each local should have their own fund. Of course since they strike often I wouldn’t see them having a ton of money in the fund. Maybe only enough to last 2-3 weeks unless part of their contracts was to have the company add funds to that.

I think they are stupid to fight for a 32 hour work week. I don’t see the company allowing that. If they do they will just add another shift, probably with temp workers, to eliminate overtime costs. Unless they get paid overtime for any extra hours over their actual work week, if it were to stay at only 40+ then barely any of them would ever see overtime pay going forward.

Also I would assume at one time they probably all had COLA. Now they realized how bad they screwed themselves by giving that up. As an example: since 2020 in my plant, just in COLA since 2020 our pay has increased around $5.79/Hr due to inflation. Typically over that time span they would have only of seen a couple of cents.

I hope all the new people at our plant see the importance of having that on your side. Obviously our company isn’t happy with how much the labor costs have increased, and there is a very good chance on our next negotiation they may pitch something to try and get us to accept an offer without that in it.

If the manufacturers decide not give in to demands, and why would they at this point? Production of UAW built vehicles will move to Mexico.

It’s certainly a possibility. But I doubt they will abandon so many plants, so soon. But all this does is help push automation. They will slowly ween the work force down as little as possible.

Same thing is happening in my plant. A lot of machines are becoming fully automated. I predict in ~20 years our work forces will be cut in half or more. Currently we have ~1100 Union employees. Company is always complaining about attendance. There’s a lot of people with FMLA and PFL. People out with injuries, and people just burning their vacation and sick time.

The machines don’t call in sick or take time off work. Most major breakdowns we repair within a couple of hours. At most something might sit for a couple of days waiting for a part we don’t have in-house or can’t make. Lots of people getting hurt in our plant out for long term and needing surgeries etc. they get huge insurance payouts which cost the company. Another thing you don’t have to worry about with the machines and robots.

The ripple effect outside of Ford with so many upfitters building on Super Duty chasis is going to be something unless they start building trucks again soon. I have no idea what their schedule is for chassis, they could be done for the year not having much impact there. Looked like many upfiters were just catching up from the pandemic.
