I have driven manual Toyota pickups since 1977. The 2016 I had was my first auto. My 2019 is the second. The 3rd gen tranny provides so many shift modes I have no problem finding one that works under different conditions. I hope you can get it fixed to your satisfaction.

Hey if it drove like it does when you hit the ECT button I wouldnt even be here. That is a shift mode I can deal with.

There is a mod that can be done to give always on ECT somewhere on this forum. You might check it out. It’s always on but, you push the button if you want it off.

I looked into that. But all that does is give them fodder to refuse to help me with any issue beyond that. I read all the time people being turned away from having simple mods like that done. I plan to talk to the same guy I talked to Friday at corporate. His exact words were "why dont they just flash it, its under warranty, they get paid regardless" Lets see how he is tomorrow. I can see it going the way my visit did yesterday. Guy pulled up the SB, said we'll get it done. Then calls me going, hey man sorry I couldnt get it to do what you were saying. So something is happening in that time. There is direction coming from above.

The Service rep said the number I call is a Customer Service. The number they have to call is technical service.

The best description Ive read yet. I am going to use some of what he said in bold and what Ive learned. This isn't an issue. Very similar to what my rep told me but worded much better.

"fuel management program trying to be compliant to new truck fuel efficiencies."

"It constantly wanting to drop your RPM'S despite leaning on the gas pedal the computer trying to "relearn" your driving pattern is only a 1/3 of it
    "

"Its designed for best fuel economy with the constant attempt to push the RPM as far below 2k as possible to achieve maximum fuel economy at any speed."

When you tow something its senses the load and keeps you in a higher rpm avoiding the issues, and when you go into sport shift mode then your overriding the computer and wont see it.

So there's nothing technically wrong with the transmission/fuel system, you have to either like the way its programmed and drives with the fuel system setup like it is, or trade the truck as there's nothing more than a reflash of its learning system which can only be done 2x, per the rep
    ."

I wish I would have picked up on this. So to those who do not like the drivability as Ive been calling it, its either take it or leave it I'm afraid.

Non detectable. Worst case you can always flashback to stock before service.

Shouldn't have to do that, Toyota should just take care of him. It's a good idea though considering the circumstances.

Of course, no doubt Toyota should do it. I got the update done. Worked for a little while. Went back to the studder.

I almost said that to the dude at the first dealership I took it to. He literally said "you cant just come here because you dont like something about the truck and then googled it, if I had a mole on my arm I wouldnt go to the internet and look before I went to the doctor" I was sitting there in shock. I said "im the fucking doctor in this scenario! Ive been an aviation mechanic for 20 years, I work on Jet engines you dont think I know how to research a problem?"

Thats when the rep handed me a post it with the 1800 number on it. They didnt even clean their writing off my window.

Jeez... the fact that the top tech didn't know what size engine on his own brand is not a good sign! There are some good dealerships out there but the bad ones really ruin it

Sometimes employees forget who is really funding their paycheck. There are also those that just shouldn't be allowed to interact with customers.

Did they pose a possible diagnostics test charge of $140? I've asked a few dealers in Orange County and they want to start with that.

Best fix for these transmissions is to run the entire truck off a cliff. What a piece of junk, I hate it for you Tacoma followers from early on if you purchase one of these. I waited and waited to buy one then finally did, what a let down. After two years of owning one I sold it and ran when I got the money in my hand. Never again will I own a Tacoma, who at Toyota thought that trans and software was ready to release when they did? I am sure I am not the only first time owner of a Tacoma who feels the same way.
