This may have been said already many times...but after my last service the ECU was reset and I decided not to use the cruise control for the next 500 miles while it was learning...has made my TRD OR shift and drive much better than it previously had after the learning cycle.

The truck is always learning. It is not a one-time deal or cycle that is completed. It is a continual process.

Drudging up a semi old thread. I just read this entire thread. What a collosal shit show! I'm in the market for a third gen and after reading this (and several other threads...), I don't know that I'd sell my 2nd gen for an automatic 3rd gen.

Presumably, people are still having these issues without any resolution? Seems like 10% of the posts are, "Hey it's not so bad". Then the remaining 90% are in the "drive it off a cliff" camp.

It the most popular mid-size pickup, still, with little or no changes to the transmission. Unless your think everyone driving one is an idiot with huge regrets, there is no issue. In my opinion there never really was. The whole thing is a classic case of group think.

love my truck. It’s been a great vehicle since day one. No TSB, no pedal commander, no shift sense, no OV Tunes. It’s fine the way it is, as long as you understand what it is.

Interesting perspective. You're clearly in the 10% I was referring to.

I don't think anyone's an idiot, just seems like a lot of banter around driveability concerns. Seemed to me like where there is smoke there is fire.

I test drove one and it got to 6th as fast as it could (then promptly came out of 6th several times as the speeds were slow), but the 2nd gen does the same thing getting to 5th. Granted, it does hold it in that gear fairly decently.

I have driven a 2nd Gen often for work and swap back and forth at times. I find them to be the same mostly, with the 3G having the extra overdrive. I find both trucks to be somewhat underpowered and require some time before you adapt and the throttle feels smooth.

I would not trade my 3G for a 2G. Not even a low-mile 2G cream puff. The new ones are much nicer, including the drivetrain, in my opinion. That 2G 5-speed auto is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Couldn't agree more. Love my 2nd gen but the drivetrain lacks a little to be desired. It's just dated. I always use the the auto to put the gear where I want it because it too hunts for fuel mileage. It's annoying. So I keep it in 4th around town - which changes shift points.

I also feel the 4.0L doesn't have much low end grunt. These things just feel underwhelming at highway speeds.

If you are used to limiting the upper gears, you will have no issue with the 3G Auto. In “s4” mode (OD gears locked out) it drives as expected.

Definitely test drive and let us know what you think.

BTW: the 3G 3.5L engine/AT combo has proven bulletproof. People don’t like the tuning, or the throttle curve, or the shift points, or whatever else they choose to obsess over, but the hardware is rock solid. Few, if any, true failures of an
engine or AT on this forum. Which is saying something with so many pickup newbs and new-to-off-roading type people.

Appreciate your perspective. The manufacturers all seem to be trying to beat the fuel economy game and it sounds like Toyota isn't immune to it. It sounds like I can live with it. Granted, if I had my druthers, I'd be in an MT. Time will tell if I end up in one. I'm in the used truck price range and manuals seem impossible to find good examples. I'm pretty damn picky.

Well....I traded my 2019 3rd Gen (8000 miles) in for another new Ford F150 Supercab 4x4 with the 5.0L 395HP V8 with a 10 speed auto. I couldn't take the transmission of the Taco anymore. Why would Toyota mate an engine that only has good power at high RPM to a transmission that constantly wants to lock in at low RPM? I understand for MPG, but my truck got only around 17-19 MPG at best. You shouldn't have to manually shift it to get it to work correctly either. Too bad...the truck rode beautiful and looked good.

After 9000 miles with the Ford V8, I'm showing an average of 19.5 MPG with larger tires and 3.73 gearing. The 10 speed transmission is unbelievable, shifts perfect and does not hunt whatsoever - when it does shift, it's flawless.

Just last week we added a 2014 Tacoma, 118,000 miles, with the 4.0L / automatic for my boys to drive. The 2nd Gen Tacos with the 4.0L, 5 speed autos shift so much nicer - no constant gear searching. If they could just combine the new 3.5L with a better transmission they'd be on to something. Hopefully Toyota will get it straight for the next generation.

Man.......why did you get the V8? They are so underwhelming compared to the boosted motors in both performance and economy. Whatever you do, don’t test drive an ecoboost, or you will be disappointed with that 5.0l forever. No comparison. We use both F150 models at work and the 5.0Ls sit at the back of the lot.

I did test drive both the 2.7 and the 3.5 Ecoboost, that's why I got the V8. Love the sound, the smoothness, and the fact I won't have to service turbos if they fail. I know the Ecos are good motors, but I have friends (that love the Ecos) who get the same fuel mileage as me but don't have the throaty sound. Plus after listening to what Ford mechanics widely recommend, the V8 was the winner. It wan't an easy decision but I am very happy.

Just updated my 2016 Sport. I think it had the original ECM. Definite change. I wasn't complaining before but did notice a "lurching" when it downshifted between 40 an 50 to pass. Very smooth now. Not sure if this "learning" will undo it but it costs nothing and it's from Toyota. Covered under my warranty so seemed like a good idea.

I know this is an old thread, anybody know if this is only for certain trucks for those years? I called my local dealer and they looked up the VIN and said there was nothing. Told them about the TSB and the lady said it was probably VIN specific

Understandable. When i open the PDF for the TSB it shows Additional Information and lists what i assume are part of the VIN numbers of the vehicles included? My VIN is 3TMCZ5ANXHM051900. I put in bold the part that corresponds with the TSB

Cool. I had it done, but then I had a buddy do the best OV tune and I’ve absolutely loved that. A tiny bit more power and empeegees improved. Win/win. Plus it holds 6th uphill.
