New truck. First truck. I’d live with it for a few months (or more) and see if you need or want it then. I bet you’ll get a sense of whether you want it.

I have a BakFlip. Got it to keep the bed less wet. Note that I didn't say dry. Also for securing cargo.

I haven't noticed any mpg savings but it adds like 50lbs so you lose there. If you are all highway driving you can make it up.

I have owned many trucks and a tonneau cover is usually the first thing I add to my daily driver. My Sport came with the factory tonneau. Had it not come with the truck, I would have put a soft tonneau on it. I have had soft tonneaus on several trucks and I have always liked how they work. There when you need them, out of the way when you don't. You do give up some security though because a sharp knife is instant access. My advice is to leave the tailgate unlocked, then maybe they will just take everything out of the back without cutting your cover. For day to day use, I love mine, and I usually know if I am headed out to make a big purchase and pull the tonneau before I leave the house.

I say save your money. If you aren’t used to having a truck, you don’t even fully know what you will actually use it for at this point. If you need one later get it, but for now use the money for better stuff. I don’t think a cover is necessary but that my own opinion and I don’t ever put stuff in the bed that needs covered.

I got a tonneau immediately. I like mine but it was expensive. I got it because I was very interested in lockable storage and almost went with a 4Runner but thought the Tacoma was a better fit with the diamond back tonneau. It is not 100% waterproof as there are slits in the bed design of the truck near the cab. I haven't caulked them yet. Also, you will need a tailgate seal to keep out the dust. You can carry 1600 lbs on top of this tonneau.

Get a softopper. Have the conveniences of having a bed cover, but be able to remove it in five minutes or less by yourself. Its truly the best of both worlds, only downfalls are less visibility when backing up and you cant lock the actual topper.

I wasn’t planning on it, but I showed up to the dealer to get the truck and it had a tonneau cover. I said “I didn’t order that and don’t want to pay for it”. They ended up just giving it to me for free...I think they didn’t want to go through the pain of uninstalling it.

But I am way glad I have it now. I really like it, both for security, but also to keep things relatively dry. Highly recommend.
