    Hi all,

I'm asking this question mainly because there is much more knowledge and better -actual experience on here than in my pea brain.

Anyway, after reading a bunch of threads on this it seems like a TRD Sport is much more preferable than an SR5. So I'm at a point where I am looking at a new 2015 SR5 for $29K, or a 2014 TRD sport with 5K miles for $30,500. Both are DCLBs from dealers. I got into this situation by going from an offroad vehicle to having a baby and needing to commute in a mazda 3. Now that the baby is 4, I want a vehicle that I can use to carry our bicycles, her powerwheels, camping gear, kayaks, and we live in the northeast crappy winter area and I need the occasional plywood/drywall run. I was waiting to see what the 2016 would get for mpg, but after reading about being the first to mod a 2016 I'm entirely fine with getting a Gen2, plus I gotta think a 2016 dclb trd is going to be at least $38K. Plus I don't think even if it gets 25 mpg it will make up the 8-10K difference.

My first question is: Is $30,500 a reasonable price for the 2014? I checked KBB and seemed like dealer trade-in would have been $27K. My plan is to do everything possible to get them to $28K (if $30.5 isn't reasonable, is $28?) giving them a $1000 profit on their end, and another $1000 profit they will make on my trade-in. But I've already heard that the dclb trd are extremely difficult to find and worry that they won't budge because of it. Which leads me to the following questions:

    1. $28K is top of the line for my financial situation. I can try to stretch it up a little but I don't think all that much more to be honest. That opens the door to trying to find ways to save in other areas. For example, I can get a dcsb trd prerunner for 27K, a dcsb non trd 4X4 for 27K, or a dcsb non trd prerunner for $24K. Anyone have some good insight of why I should just get a prerunner - like the trd 2wd rear diff will be fine in the snow based on experience?

    2. If I plan on a 2.5" OME lift and 275s anyway don't drop coin on a trd sport?

    3. save money on the long bed because I can just buy a bed extender?

    4. or Just buy the damn DCLB TRD sport because its not all that much more per month (approximately $110) for everything more I'd be getting?

Thank you all for you responses. AND - I'm interested in what trucks you are selling, I'd just prefer low miles as I will need it to be reliable for like the next 10-15 years,

    - Aaron

    I had a 2010 SR5 and a 2012 Sport. Now I have a 2015 SR5. So I've had both.

I'd get the SR5. Especially if you are going to do lift/suspension mods.

The Sport is a nice package. But I found I like the SR5 seats better. And the other upgrades don't mean a whole lot to me.

I'd make 4x4 a priority. You can make other mods or changes. Making a 2wd into a 4wd isn't an endeavor you'd want to undertake. IMO.

    Good luck.

More mods to come.
Get whatever is going to make you happy . Sometimes you have to stretch the finances to do that. With that being said depending on how bad the snow is a 2 wheel drive is probably out of the question. If you buy any used vehicle on the East coast check the frame for rust special up north where your located the salt tears the frames up on these trucks. Not a fan of long beds but with that being said i definitely see the use of them. In all honesty i would just go ahead and get the trd sport long bed over just a short bed with a bed extender you will do better off.

Thanks for the quick responses. my heart is telling me the same about the dclbs. its the damn wallet thats looking at me angrily. guess I'm now down to new SR5 vs slightly used TRD sport.

Looking forward to some more opinions. And if anyone on here is selling an already lifted DCLB with lower miles at a fair to both of use price whatever those details to be hashed out are.

You're paying for bling on the sport model. I recommend going with the new SR5. I went base model so that I wouldn't be paying twice (once at the dealer, again when I mod) for substandard features. Keep it simple at time of purchase and then add the features you really want - with the brand of stereo, suspension, etc... which you want.

To sort of go along with what others are saying, if you plan on upgrading parts anyway, lift, I'd go with a SR5 over TRD. Also you can still get the long bed in SR5. Also, I'd go with 4x4 over prerunner. Even if you don't use it often, you'll wish you had it those few times you need it and in the snow. That's the only regret I have about mine is I was thinking I'd never really use it.

Oh, this is good info. I agree and am set on 4wd long bed now. I had no idea about that seat to table, that is kinda cool. and, unfortunately I like the color matched stuff on the TRD but also could give two shits about a hood scoop. I guess maybe its coming down to how low the dealer will go on the used TRD, like if less than the new maybe Ill get that one. either that or the seats are the ultimate deciding factor if both end up close. Although I can also save on wheels with the TRD when i get the OME parts.

thanks for the responses everyone, i was half-expecting a > read the toyota website for the differences. but not having actually owned either wanted to get advice based on experience. its much appreciated.

Color matched parts are frequently sold when people upgrade parts to after market bumper, etc..
