Like think of the guys who buy new VW or Mercedes diesels. Those shitboxes still burn a quart of oil a month right off the lot. Those guys don’t know how good they have it.

And there are robust works cited sections too, which allow you to vet the sources. Wikipedia is a fine starting point, and often it’s pretty darn useful. But a lot of people don’t have much experience dealing with peer-reviewed sources, the scientific method, and what constitutes relatively objective authorship.

Saying that you can go 15k but 10k is playing it safe is the same argument as you can go 10k but go 5k to be safe.

And if you can go 15k, then you could probably also go 20k and play it safe by going 17.5k.

Oil analysis might show that it’s still good at higher mileages. It might be dirty, but still might be good.

If you can go 880,000 miles with 10k changes, then maybe you can go 1.5 million miles on 5k changes.
And I should add, maybe not.

    Who knows?

Good point. The only way to know would be to attempt to define the constants and the variables scientifically create a hypothesis, test and have peers review it.

I would bet anything that the studies were paid for by the interested party with the talking points in mind.

These studies are not peer reviewed, and only come to light if the organization who funded it allows it.

    Stock and staying that way
Truth. I am on a bbq forum, and have seen people argue that Aaron Franklin and Myron Mixon don't know how to cook a brisket. Ironically their techniques are quite different, but their competition record and success in the restaurant business indicates they have a clue.

I have wondered if those that advocate more frequent oil changes have considered the effects of the dry start where it takes a brief time to fill the filter before the system is pressurized? Put another way, would an engine last longer or shorter if the oil & filter were changed every 50 miles?

I would have to say it would last longer as there is no way you would ever be low on oil, how many of us check our oil every 50?

Only the MT purists that always pay cash for a new vehicle because their shit don't stink.

You really should be checking every 25 miles to be safe.

Just hit 1k miles. Taking mine in this week for the “break in completed” oil and filter change. Going to the highest Yelp reviewed Toyota dealership near me.

I’m going to address the big elephant in the room, which is the maximum number of miles the factory is willing to accept that we put on the engine for the warranty to remain in effect until it expires. And everyone ought to accept that it is 10k miles oil & filter change.

Note that it's a MAXIMUM not a minimum.

I wonder how many here drive their vehicle(s) at maximum speed, or floor the accelerator at idle to the MAX rpm redline every-time.

I’m willing to bet that some of those that drive to the MAX are going to wreck sooner than others, some are going to have more close calls than others, and some are going to go much farther than others.
If you ever watch NASCAR, even the best drivers with the best cars wreck, but they all have fresh clean oil & filters on their engines. Ask me how I know.

As for me, when I see a NASCAR wanna be coming full throttle on my rear view mirror, I take cover and move out of the way into safety because I already know what may happen.
That’s also why there are speed limits on most roads, speed limiting software on our trucks engines and there are limits on the number of miles (10k) they want us to put on oil. It’s safer not driving full throttle, revving the engine to MAX redline every-time and changing the oil & filter.

Moreover, if changing the oil & filter is NOT allowed at 5k miles, I don’t see it written on the owners manual. But some here on TW seem to have in writing. :jerkoff:

I did however find this written under MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS pg 440 7-2 :

“General maintenance should be performed on a daily basis. This can
be done by yourself or by a Toyota dealer.”

WTF, really? So I could be getting some 5k used oil if I changed early?
