I have a buddy who works at a local Ford dealer. Fords have the same 10k interval. When people come in to change oil at 5K, they’ll do it for free, but they take that oil and put it in another vehicle that came in for an early oil change. It’s a win/win.

If you change the oil regularly it will.

Oh, I couldn't possibly give even the slightest shit how, when, where or with what type/brand of oil someone uses....or whether they change it at all. I was more pointing out just how often these same threads pop up. It's always something like, "holy shit, 10k mile oil change, what?!!"

5 model years into the current Taco and nearly a decade and millions of other Toyota models later, for that matter, and some some people are still discovering this?

I was skeptical when BMW started including maintenance in their 4yr 50K new car warranty, the recommendation went to 10k miles.

Nothing changed except who paid for it.

    Others like Toyota followed suit.

Why does this surprise anyone. If I was paying for your oil changes, I would perform them every 10k miles or the least often I could get away with it.

If I own the car.......I do it at the minimum 5k range not the maximum 10k.

Now....first hand, I have two identical 328i in the family that I recently changed out the oil pan gasket on.

One did oil change for 50k miles every 10k, the other did it for 65k every 5k miles.

Conclusions:. Change it every 5k without question.

Reminds me of those "just okay, is no ok commercials".

Now that I think about it, that commercial is memorable, but the product is not. What are the selling? Hmm?

? Condensation evaporates when your engine oil reaches operating temps (I believe the boiling point of water). That's why short trips suck if that's all you do.

I'm surprised no ones brought up the fact that the manual actually says 5k miles, not 10k. If you drove on a dirt road, tow a trailer, or through dust once in the last 5k miles, you need an oil change. Straight from the manual.

This engineer is telling you to trust the Toyota engineers who designed the engine. Because what they say is law around here and the law says 5k between changes. Now, I don't know the PPM of dust that classifies as dusty, but I guarantee you've driven through dust.

That’s at least one of the reasons I became my own engineer :D
I’m sure you have a lot of great company!

That’s brilliant! Unethical business practice mind you, but brilliant.
Kind of like when you leave leftovers at the restaurant and they put it back in the pot for the next guy

We have a winner, this should be the end of the story

    Cheers

The language you are using is incorrect and not what the manual says at all.
You should only be doing 5k mile oil changes, per the manual, IF you primarily drive in those conditions. Not if you do it one time in 5k miles. Please don't spread bad info.

he’s trying to save the planet and limit the import of oil from Saudi Arabia. Highly ethical.

Answer, Yes. For this guy anyhow, not a mechanic, buying my first Tacoma, a 2019, (so I wasn't paying attention to service details on the 3rd gen when they first came out). Just traded in my 2001 Tundra, bought new, when the idea of 10,000 intervals for syn oil was not common theory.

I get your point. I should've searched posts better before I started a thread. I am glad though that you still found the thread interesting enough to post on twice.

Yea we are, people give out bad info on a regular basis.
For me personally change your oil whenever you want with whatever you want, but don't give out bad info pretending it's what the actual Toyota engineers said.

I change my oil whenever I feel it’s necessary. My truck is stock so I don’t worry about tire rub. Oh, and I don’t want a Ford Ranger or a Ridgeline for that matter. :boink: Have a nice day my friends!

You don’t get to choose Ridgeline. Ridgeline chooses you when you’re ready.

I personally believe 10k is a marketing thing by the motor oil companies and that the oil is plenty dirty by 7500 miles. I change every 5k. Talked to a mechanic and he said 10k is a stretch in his opinion. No harm in changing it more often if u can afford it.

I’ve seen those lab results on here but I say follow your intuition.

Neighbors Camry....8 years old. About 180k on the clock. Given to their college age son a couple of years ago. So it been beat on a bit.

Never anything except the cheapest 0/20 oil you can buy (usually SuperTech) and changed at 10k intervals (I've done a few of them). Engine is baby-butt smooth and very healthy.

I’ve never heard of marketing something by selling 1/2 as much of it.
