My understanding is the oil change interval extension was an effort by government agencies that proved the OEM recommendations were too often, and thus were harming consumers and the planet. Can’t remember where I gleaned this info, but I do think there was an “expose” and a study in the 90’s or something.

Not to beat a dead horse but I actually am curious about one thing....I get my truck serviced at the dealer and before I leave they put the sticker in the top left of my windshield. It has not yet been 10,000 miles until the next. Just an FYI, they are putting next oil change stickers in my window for about 5,000 miles.

And here we are listening to everything the gubberment says. I'm from the days where oil changes were done every 3,000 miles. I must be getting old.

P.s. I trust the engineers from 90's Toyotas more than those of today.

Toyota recommends that you change the oil every 10k, but that you bring it in for service every 5. So on the 5k intervals all they are (supposed to be) doing is rotating tires and topping off fluids. Every other visit is an oil change.

We'll, as is this a Friday thread, I was a bit flippant. However I do do my best to not outright lie.

Everyone here primarily drives on dusty roads. What the manual does not do is specify the amount of dust. Unless you drive primarily in the rain, the manual is telling you 5k :)

Engineers know what they're doing man.

Then we have the Boeing Max, the Hyatt walkway, The Firestone tire issue, and the list goes on

Remember someone graduated at the bottom

Change oil often and give the old shit to your fellow TW brethren.

Read the footnotes. Nothing about driving in dust once, it says primarily.

Yeah my '06 MINI Cooper S was 15k intervals. Same with Porsche. Those crafty Germans. I still changed it every 7500 mi because I beat that car like a red headed step child. Plus with German cars most of the oil leaks out by like 6000 miles. Might as well just change it. haha

    What’s a dusty road?

It all depends on where you live. The guys on that plane could tell you.

If you wash your vehicle in inland Southern California, the deserts of Cali or Central California where it’s all an irrigated desert and often very windy, it’ll be very dusty or dirty again in a matter of hours.

Unless it’s raining, millions of people drive under those dusty desert conditions every day.

And then there’s Baja California...and Central and Eastern Oregon high deserts...and the rest of the Western and Southwest States and a lot of the world.

The U.S. and much of the world is not all green.
