Didn't the dealer just work on the rear brakes a couple of months ago?
I would start there since they were just working on it.

Yep, actually one month ago. The drums were warped so they resurfaced them. I think they screwed something up. It's at the dealer now.

Never understood how a big slab of cast iron that does a low % of work could ever get enough heat to be called warped. I do understand a drum being cast out of round, creating a weird result. It wouldn't seem like turning would really be able to properly correct that. I do recall reading here of several who had drums replaced under warranty for being out of round.........

I agree. Something has come undone.

It will be interesting to hear what the final report is.

[IMG] [IMG] Dealer kept the truck for eleven days and found nothing wrong with it. Said if I can duplicate the issue to bring it back.

Ran through this again over the weekend after launching my boat…4 low with the diff locked wouldn’t break them free, had to pull the wheels and beat the shit outta the drums with a big rock (all I had) and finally got ‘em free a couple hours later. Based on the noises I heard…something is now broken…gonna sort that out this week, then sell the thing.

doesn’t have enough power to pull the boat up the ramp (2000lbs) without smoking the clutch or going to 4 low, brakes lock up when they get wet….this is a poor excuse for a truck. Dealt with the same brake issue on my 2nd gen, but at least it had a decent engine in it.

^Yeah the drum brake design is a piece of shit with any environmental contamination. 4th gen discs will be an improvement, at least until the electric parking brake actuators go bad...

Try installing ceramic or organic compound shoes. I have Bosch shoes and don't get the rust binding.

Check your parking brake adjustment. Mine completely locks the wheels on the first click. It's supposed to be self adjusting, but maybe that doesn't always work.

The design changed in 2005…I’ve been in the brake industry for 25 years and remember figuring out why this new design was a piece of shit with respect to the parking brake mechanism back in 2005 when I bought my new X-runner and had this problem….tried a few different non-met aftermarket shoes and they they didn’t create enough friction to even hold the truck on a launch ramp…played with different arc grinds and couldn’t make them work.

Detailed will be here tomorrow and I’ll call carmax. Over it.

going back to a GM full-size.

Something similar happened to me in freezing temps after some shallow water crossings. Used the e-brake overnight at the campsite like an idiot and it froze. Tried hammer method, heating it up, 4WD. Nothing worked until my buddy yanked on the e-brake cable right before the rear wheel, freeing it up. Also happened a year prior in a parking garage. Was able to reverse down 6 stories and had it towed to dealer. Also got the, "We weren't able to recreate it, if it happens again bring it back" line. I don't use the e-brake unless it's warm out now.

    This requirement is pretty basic…

    - truck needs to move

when it’s 110 degrees and I’m burning the shit outta myself rolling around on the ground jacking up the truck to figure out how to make it do that….I’m moving on.

Sucks you’re having issues. But, everyone isn’t having this problem. That proves it’s not a design problem. It’s a maintenance and knowledge problem.

It doesn't prove anything. If it wasn't design issue, I wouldn't have it happen on 2 different trucks with the same rear brakes and nobody else would either....and they do (that's why it's been posted about a bunch).

I had issues with my 2019 last winter, rear passenger drum would freeze and lock up when i ised the ebrake when parked. I replaced the drum, pads and hardware and cleaned the assembly. Little pricey for oem parts but fixed the problem.

OP here. Well, it happened again the other day. I wash my truck, dry it, pull into the garage. About an hour latter get in to go somewhere and about halfway backing down my driveway it slams to a stop. It won't go forward or backward, brakes have locked. I put it in drive and start tapping the brakes, that's when all the brake malfunction warnings pop up. I keep tapping the brakes and it will slowly start moving forward and the brakes release. I put it in reverse and go about 10 feet and slam, locked again. Do the same routine tapping the brakes just to get it in the garage. The next day it drives fine. The first dealer kept it for 11 days and could not find the issue. Took it to a different dealer and they also kept it 11 days and could not find anything wrong. They ran it thru a car wash, sprayed it with water but could not duplicate.

I went ice fishing one time pulled e brake on ice. Sucked so bad. 4wd drived it and I was drifting all over the place. Never again. Then one time pull up my boat trailer and parked her. The thing lock up when I came back. They had done the grass to and had some rope netting lay over the grass. Rear wheel locked and caught on all the rope netting and that was not fun.

I live in South Florida and use the hand brake every time I park at even the slightest incline and have never had this issue. Rented a house for a year with a driveway at a decent slope, hand washed the truck all the time and parked it with the hand brake and never an issue. Truck is a '22 sr5 2wd, 27k miles.
