Sounds like it was sold and brought back for unknown reasons to you or us, but not before the DMV paperwork was processed. My truck was a dealer trade from the southern part of the state to the northern part, so it had just over 300 miles on it. My warranty paperwork has the mileage on the truck from when I returned from my test drive, so that's where the coverage begins. If its a used truck you need to get certified pre owned warranty coverage and get a check back for the difference in price. I would also push to find out why it was returned the first time. If its not some rare combo and you just have to have this one, I would be taking it back for a new truck. If its the one you really want and need, then get a refund and warranty confirmation as long as the reason for return was within reason. If they can't provide you details as to why it was returned, then I wouldn't care if it was the one I really wanted, I would not feel comfortable with that.

You dont have to sign the paperwork and commit to new terms at this poi t. You can bring the truck and drop it off and get any funds you paid to the dealer back.

I would take this as an opportunity to seek a better deal. Unless you paid cash the finance rates are different between new and used as well.
If you are not keen on paying more over the term in intrest or you would like to FInd a better deal, get your money back and walk. New tacomas often get great intrest rates.

All good advice. You just bought into a potential 10 year hold, not getting what you thought you were getting. If they never called you and you never knew.... everything could be fine for 10 years. Or not.

I'm with the others. If your lifestyle can afford being without the truck for a bit, I'd tell them you're going to drop the vehicle off tomorrow and are calling the bank to unwind your payments. You expect a full refund or an alternate equivalent truck in replacement. And pack of Pez for your trouble.

Or, if you're comfortable with the truck and their reasoning (I'd want to talk with the previous owner), then parlay it into an extended warranty ala CPO, and pricing of a used truck.

If the dealer had not called you, ignorance would be bliss. At least the dealer made the effort to reach out and inform you rather than finding out at a way later date. Be reasonable and give them a fair shake of what you are wanting for the inconvenience, but do not expect like you hit the lottery and are going to get a deal of the century on either another new vehicle or steep used discount pricing on what you are in.

Also, the lawyer up business some are advocating will just get you shut down by the dealership if you go in all Johnnie Cochran on them.

What dealership wouldn't lose a few thousand to avoid the shitstorm? I would ask that the vehicle be priced as a used example, should shave 1500-2000 off the price.

Or demand a swap to a brand new example.

Sometimes things do get goofed up and it could be an honest mistake. But my guess is the problem showed up when they tried to register it for you and something clashed with the DMV; ie they tried to register it as new and it was already in the system.

As mentioned, no lottery here. But... you do deserve what you paid for. Their mistake (possibly honest), but they now own the cost of making it right. If it were me and I were comfortable with the truck and I planned on keeping it longterm, it would be worth a few thousand in rebate. If I only hold for 3-4 years it would take more than $2k because you're going to sell to the third owner or have to trade in as the second owner. You don't want to go through the trouble of explaining all that mess on a 3 year old truck.

If you're going for the rebate, consider that if you plan on doing stuff to it and buying parts from them, their cost is not your cost. So, if you want $1500 to make it right, that's at least $2500 in parts or service. Maybe ceramic paint & rim coating + CPO.

That's a great idea. I was just going to say check if it's been registered. Make a copy , take it to the dealer.

Is anything in the Toyota warranty only for the original owner?

If you got a loan you have to explain this to them as well. Interest rates and LTV are different for used.

What a mess. I'd tell them to find me a new truck.

It’s called an unwind and happens for various reasons. Most of the time it is because the dealer sold the truck and the financing fell through. You can’t bring back a vehicle you purchased under contract for any other reason in most states.

They should have disclosed it to you when purchasing. It is still a vehicle with super low mileage and is probably worth close to new. I have purchased them before and usually ask for a better deal or accessories or extended service. Other than that, not a huge deal. See if you can get a few hundred off and deal with it. Enjoy the truck.

As far as warranty, Toyota will treat it as new and finance it as new. It is mostly dmv related.
