ok guys. It’s been about 6 years since I sold my 2010 dcsb and bought a dodge Cummins 3500 to tow the toy hauler. Well life is changing and decided to sell the 30’ toy hauler and Cummins and get back into a Tacoma.

With that said, I might buy another small camper or do the roof top tent thing. Been doing lots of reading and chasing forums down. I will do a small lift and tires like my 2010. I get 12mpg in the Cummins and want 20+ mpg out of the Tacoma which I’m reading is pretty much unrealistic.

So with that said, I want a long bed off road package this time around. Can’t find a double cab long bed manual transmission. Are the autos really that bad? Keep hunting for that manual? Tons of auto long beds at the local dealer for $38k-$40k minus $3k dealer incentive. Fair pricing? Cavalry blue and cement are leading the pack.

Or am I’m expecting too much of the lovable Tacoma and should just keep the Cummins or go with a tundra?

You’ll be looking a long time for a Manual double cab long bed, Toyota doesn’t offer a manual trans for the DCLB. I’ve got an auto DCLB Sport and am quite happy with it and am regularly getting 20-24mpg, I would have gotten an Off-road if they offered it with a long bed in Canada. The auto trans and new engine in the 3rd gens is quite different from the previous generation so be sure to test drive as many of the trucks as you can or see if the dealer will let you take it over night and go for a good drive. At the end of the day I would buy mine again if it came down to it.

2" lift MT and if I drive with just a little throttle easily get 20MPG. Give it some gas and you will be at 18MPG quickly. I recently pulled my 3700 lb Lance from Long Island to Rhode Island about 130 miles and got 12 MPG on way up and 14 MPG an way down. Love having a 20 ft trailer. I can stop in almost any parking lot and make U 20190421_175149.jpg turns if I have to.

If you already know you want the MT. Do not sacrifice for the AT. Unless you absolutely have to have a long bed, you most likely will never be completely happy with the AT. (I have owned both in the 3rd gen). You will also be able to see many configurations of RTTs and small campers on this site.

Personally, after reading about the paint issues with the blue, I'd get the cement. My personal choice is the silver but the cement would have been my second choice. As far as MPG is concerned, there are plenty of folks here that average 20 or better with the V6. See my sig. Mine is completely stock. Bigger tires and lift kits will knock that down of course.

I'd think it comes down to what a small camper actually is. Most Tacomas are getting low 20s, so adding a lift and larger tires, is more than likely going to put you back in the teens, and also not help your towing expectations either.

Yeah I was thinking a small light weight 20’ camper and towing I know the mileage will be bad. And I really want the long bed. So guess manual is out.

I really wanted to be back into the Tacoma but the towing is my one limiting factor. I’ve gotten used to big diesel power. And the Tundra just is not as appealing to me even though the wife loves it. Because at tundra size I feel the tundra is way behind other full size rigs.

If you can settle for an Access Cab there is one in your region:

    Mine has been great, 2.25" lift, sliders, 265/70 17s, V6 6sp MT:
