Haha that it is! Oddly enough i kind of liked the challenge of all this at first, but now I’m getting a bit tired of it ha I would rather not have to listen to my music at 40 just to block out the howl. Maybe that is being ridiculous? Haha

Attached a pic of pad pillar no. 5. Not what i was imagining. Maybe I got the wrong part somehow? Lol23EB265F-F8C1-4E3F-8414-7C2A619F03C2.jpg

The attachment shows the frame dynamic dampener - Those are on "back order" according to my dealer. I went in yesterday for my T-SB and called two days prior to ensure all parts were on hand. Well after 5 hours they called me and informed me they could not perform the T-SB because they did not have all the parts. The Assistant Service Manager who placed the order screwed it up. They did not have the frame dynamic dampeners. $hit! No telling when they will arrive. What a f up Toyota has made when they don't even have the parts available for a T-SB that has been out for months.

Dropped off my truck this morning for this. I had it in back in December and they acknowledged the noise but it was deemed normal since other trucks on the lot had it also. Hopefully they acknowledge the noise again and get me in line for ordered parts...

    *Update: parts on order

Took apart the back seat area of my truck yesterday. It actually isn't too bad to do. The only hang up I had were the c-pillar lower trim panels. I was afraid I was going to break them until I watched a How-To video. Also, don't let the seat belt retract.. That's not fun to deal with after that happens ha

Anyways, I still don't know where to put the rubber pad pillar things. TSB says bottom of pillar, but mine had a big plastic plug with spray foam around it. There is a one way valve type thing in the plastic that opens up into a cavity below the c-pillar. Wish I would have looked at it more and taken some pics, but I was in a hurry. Ended up placing two layers of thick rubber/foam in there before closing it back up. No difference in sound after. Still can be heard above HD radio 30 and from 61-53mph, but I didn't expect the foam/rubber to do much.

I also messed around with rear cab mounts. Everything I tried still gave me the howl. I was hoping for some positive results, but eh. One thing I did notice yesterday was that the howl seems to be much louder on the passenger side than the drivers side. I really need to have someone drive while i sit in the back to confirm though.

I'm thinking Toyota claimed it was differential vibration. Band aid fix at best. Don't quote me though. Just doesn't make sense. Does your truck also have axle wrap? like a large clunk...going to a stop..?

I mean the only other vehicle I've owned that makes a sound like this, was a 2006 Nissan Xettera 4x4 Offroad. But It had 60K miles on it. It used a Dana 44 hybrid, much more robust and stout design. ( wasn't as loud as my Tacoma with less miles)

Yeah, I really have no clue what is. I just want whatever it is to be fixed. So far I’m 0 for 3 on that ha

Talked to my apartment neighbor finally who has a 2017 DCLB TRD Off road. He has no howl he says. But he has about 300lbs of gear in his bed 24/7 and a boat load of stuff in his back seat. Like you could not fit anymore back there. He could possibly have a slight howl and would never know.

I do have the harsh downshift at times from 2nd to 1st. It feels like someone has rear ended me or a heavy loaded shifted into the back of the cab. At least I think it’s harsh downshift and not axel wrap ha it happens around 5-10mph when slowing down. I’ve learned to avoid it by braking differently. Dealer says it’s a software issue, but you know how dealers are ha

I don't understand Toyota.. I test drove a F150 FX4 yesterday with the 3.5 Ecobost. No howl, no harsh downshifting or clunks to a stop. Tons more power with the turbo. Turns easier on a dime. Only downside is a hefty price tag. New ones are like 50K. The manager told me alot of people have traded in 3rd gens (Tacomas)for other things. He said nobody trades in a 2nd gen though. He's got a point.. I mean I know hes trying to sell a truck at Ford but...

Few of their salesmen gave me a funny look since I'm already driving a Tacoma. Like why would you want a Ford?? They all seem shocked when I tell them my story..

My 2.7 EB was a monster but the 3.5 has been plagued with it's own issues mainly the timing chain. They switched to dual injection as well. It had the 6R80 in it and it would get stuck in 1st when it was cold then it would go away once you could finally get it to shift. 1 time a day like clock work. I'm not sure what they are doing at the factories in KC and DB but most come off the lot with quite a bit of surface rust.

As unhappy as I am with my Taco I just don't think there is anything being put out that's initial quality. I saw a poll saying that the majority of new vehicle owners are unhappy with their purchases. We are being given all the latest and greatest but at lower quality. The closest thing I had was my 2016 Honda Civic 1.5T . I lost both due to Harvey.

For sure, every company has its gremlins... It's all about how they deal with it from a customer service standpoint, acknowledge the issue and fix it and move on that knowledge for future fixes.. But never tell a customer " normal characteristic" on a brand new vehicle.. That's insulting... Obviously Toyota seems to think the issue is with a harmonic vibration from a differential vs a mechanical one... Many people had the TSB work done and report the sound is still there... Either its a issue with sound or the gearsets are just nosiy...

Its interesting because the sound is not constant. If you notice this video on the Xterra, if you hit the gas the sound is gone. It's only on deceleration just like my Tacoma at 50-55 MPH. " Feathering". My 2006 Xterra did the same thing. Just not as loud. At the time of owning the Xterra, I didn't care because I had no warranty and paid substantially less than I did for the Tacoma.

Holy crap that Xterra is loud! Bet it’s even louder in person since phone mics aren’t the greatest.

My howl started out only under deceleration. It then moved to deceleration and feathering around mile 1300. Now it’s moved on to howling on deceleration, feathering, and slight acceleration. The howl on acceleration started around mile 2000. I’m now at 2400 miles I think.

You're nuttier than a squirrel turd if you think Toyota is the only manufacturer to tell a customer a lie.

Wow, your Tacoma’s howl is definitely loud. My taco used to have a howling noise but it’s been fixed completely with the new TSB. Been howl free since . Then. I upgraded my tires to a duratrac load c 265/75/16 all I hear is the tires howling on the freeway but it’s weird because tires howling is louder in front than in the backseat . Maybe time to upgrade to duratrac ☺️ And never be bothered by the diff howl .

Troll? The guy who cried the whine prevented his truck from doing highway speeds wants to call me a troll? Lol.
Once the whine was verified to be a noise issue only you still continue with the speil of "it must be something else". Even after people who have their gears tore apart verifying the condition of them, you continued your spiel. Even after people pm'd you more info, you still carry on. Your posts are littered with tidbits and unsubstantiated claims that support your position, yet fly in the face of the facts.

Bottom line, you're unhappy and want everyone else to be as well. I have the whine as well in my truck. You deal with your way, I'll deal with it mine. Anyone that has spent any time in this thread or the other one knows what you're all about.

You're correct I am unhappy. Other people have different views on what is acceptable on their vehicles. If differential whine is acceptable to you on a 35-40k truck. Why do you continue to post on this thread if your happy? Shouldn't you be enjoying your ' truck'? I had the TSB performed on my truck, new leafs and it's actually louder or just as loud. I don't want people to be unhappy, I offered remedies including how to file a case for a buy back. I didn't have to do that for anyone. Even when I mentioned that, you came out and said " I'm pretty sure you can't talk about that". Are you a lawyer? Paralegal?
