After a few months post TSB my howl is still pretty prevalent.

Not nearly as loud as before, but as loud as my first diff I’d say.

Can still hear it above my music from 55-62 mph or so.

I was happy at first that it cut the noise 50% or so but after all that I can still hear it all the time.

I don’t get passengers calling it out anymore so that embarrassment has passed thankfully. I still think I have lost value in the secondary market because anyone who hears the howl (post TSB) would not buy my truck.

I’m resigned to installing my own aftermarket gears, once they’re available and my drivetrain warrenty is up.

Only posting this because someone keeps saying that this TSB is the end all and has called out those not happy with it.

For me it has been a minor improvement to be generous.

I sincerely hope everyone else has a better outcome than I have had.

Not the kind of news I we want to hear. Sorry man! Have you taken your truck back to the dealer or notified corporate? The more data they get the better. Did it at least shorten the mph range any?

Knowing my luck I’ll be right there with you after I drive tomorrow. My howl has changed since I got the rig. At first it only howled under deceleration. It then added to howling while feathering the throttle after mile 1200. Now it also does it while accelerating slightly. Just crazy how it can change.

    Yeah it’s a bummer.

My dealer and corporate are both aware that it dampened the noise but didn’t eliminate it. To be fair they never said it would get rid of the noise.

Like I said it helped but didn’t hardly solve the issue.

I’m sure this TSB is the solution for a lot of people and hopefully you too.

I’ve refrained from posting my negative experience because I don’t want to convolute others positive experiences.

Well, I was only able to get up to the howl range twice this morning on my way to work (short work commute & slow drivers in fast lane...).

The Good: So there is definitely less howl from 55 to 53! I had the volume almost all the way off and windows up and I couldn't hear too much in that range. Thats good!

The Bad: The howl is still present from 59-56. I was only in that range once, but I was able to easily hear it. I'm not sure yet if it has been reduce any since my ears are tuned to it and I was only able to test it once this morning.

Still to Test: I was not able to test 61-59mph for the howl. I'll have to try to do that tomorrow morning or maybe this afternoon (depends on traffic).

Hopefully 61-59 will be as quiet as 55-53! :fingerscrossed:

Sorry to hear this hasn’t worked out for you. I’m hoping mine is much better. Also, we need to hear the good and the bad outcomes.

Bummer, I was hoping this would have masked the sound more.

Yeah, I was hoping for more silence, too. 57-59 was peak intensity before so I figured it would be the tough range to silence. Hoping 61-59 will be a bit more quiet. I think it should be since that range was similar in howl to 55-53 (knock on wood).

This means I won’t be returning my sound damper and foam. I’ll be installing that hopefully sooner than later. If anyone has any tips, tricks, video links, etc on how to install sound damper that would be greatly appreciated. Looks straight forward, but I’d hate to install it incorrectly and have it not be as effective as possible.

The TSB seems to be pretty detailed so that is a good start. I think you may be one of the first trailblazers here. Maybe we have a Toyota tech or two on here that could share some insight.

Yeah, I think I am the 2nd or 3rd person on TW to do it on their own. I’ve been emailing a Toyota tech on here who has been very helpful. What I need to do is pull the entire rear seat out, sit back there, and have someone drive in the howl range. I am almost certain my howl mainly comes from the passenger side. Which is odd, but would be interesting if that’s the case. I just need to be driven so I can put my head down by each c-pillar. All while being in a seatbelt of course :D

Well, traffic sucked on my short commute home so I wasn’t able to test the entire range again. Things I noticed this time around:

    1) Howl is very quiet/almost completely gone between 53-56 which is better than the 53-55 I thought this morning! Lol

    2) Definitely have the howl from 57-59 still, but it is not as loud as before. I didn’t have time to test with volume so I can’t really say how much it has been reduced. Before I could hear it with the radio around 35. I am thinking that may have been cut down to 20-25 now. Will test that tomorrow hopefully.

    3) Still not sure about 60-61. I need to be able to take it up to above that and let off the gas through the entire range. Maybe tomorrow morning.

Also, I still feel like the howl is mainly coming from passenger rear corner. The c-pillar/cab mount area. I’m hoping to pull the rear interior and have someone else drive me this weekend to confirm.

Still waiting on sound deadener and foam, but I did receive this in the mail today:

Hoping for better results once all said and done.

My taco is finally going under the knife. Had to deal with a bunch of BS to even get to this point so I'm hoping for the best. Dealer says it'll probably take a day and a half and gave me this fugly loaner from enterprise... I'll update with results.

    I'm sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately that was my experience with most of the TSBs Toyota put out.

Your post makes me feel good about my decision to unload the truck when I did. The howl was the final straw. When they released the tsb about 4-5 months after I traded it, I was a little annoyed. But in true Toyota fashion parts were delayed and the results are mediocre .

My howl is loudest in sixth gear from 68-70mph. And by loud, I mean freakin loud. Not sure it's worth taking in at this point though considering the responses here.

If you read back there a lot of positive responses to the TSB.

I think it’s worth a try. Many people, actually most, are pleased with the outcome. Some are not and I hope they can get their remaining issues worked out. I pick up my truck tomorrow. My howl was loud so I’ll report back and let everyone know how it went.

I believe the TSB says the noise comes on at a much lower MPH than mine. We'll see how it goes in another month when I go in for the 15k mile service.

I’m pretty happy with my results, but I do wish it would have made a bit more quiet or shortened the howl range even more. That’s why I’m going to add the foam and sound damper. I don’t mind much as I enjoy working on my truck! Ha
