Time for me to chime in with my results.

What Moondog describes above is exactly my results. My whine was loudest at 55 mph and could be heard over the AC on and radio blasting music. But getting it back after having the TSB performed this weekend literally the whine is completely gone at 55 mph, and only my trained OCD ear that has been listening to this hmmmm for the past 1.5 years can just BARELY....and I mean BARELY for a split second......hear the faintest traces of it when lifting off the gas when on the smoothest of roads between 58 and 60 mph (with the radio and AC off). With radio on at normal volume I could not hear a thing.

I would as well call this a great success and if you have the same whine get the TSB done as soon as you can. I am amazed at the results just changing these few simple parts does. I would say my whine is 95% gone now. If it was like this from the beginning I would have never noticed it.

Oh and I have a DCLB. As per the TSB I got all the parts except for new springs.

Hope everyone else gets their issue taken care of. Glad Toyota finally made this happen.

So after all these posts for a year the differential was going to blow it is nothing more than harmonic vibration. LOL.
That's more amazing than the whining holes.
Simple fix, no big problem as it was made out to be......as usual.

Mass hysteria? LOL. In the end, I’m glad that the fix is masking the sound but the level of noise/sound is still something that Toyota didn’t anticipate. Even Toyota at one time was replacing the diffs, so it was easy to make assumptions that it could be the diff. It also took quite some time to get the fix out to us. I’m happy and made the decision early on to wait as long as possible for a fix. I would bet that most everyone else will be happy if they get the fix. We have sadly had a few that this didn’t work out for and if this fix didn’t work for them then something else needs to be done to take care of them. Thanks for posting and peace to all....

I'm carrying my '17 TRDOR in tomorrow afternoon for this, and the squeaky leaf spring tsb. Got 32,6XX miles on it, and it shouldn't sound like a 40 year old chevrolet. I've held off on powerwashing/lube-ing the leaf packs. Didn't want to give them a reason to disqualify the work........

It doesnt' fully fix the issue. I still believe it is the diff, but it does help.

The noise does sound like excess noise from the rear differential area but the issue is whether or not the noise is just excessive noise or a mechanical issue with the differential. Honestly, I don’t know. Resonance is always tough to pinpoint but I guess if we are all back here in 2-3 years with diffs seizing up we’ll know. I hope that’s not the case and some members have logged a fair share of miles with no seizing up. I’d hope that a mechanical defect would have shown itself by now or the whine/howl would have gotten louder. Mine did get louder (or my ears noticed it better) at first but then stayed the same ever since about 1100 miles. I’m at 10,000 miles now. I truly hope this is the end of the issue for all of us.

Had the TSB performed on my 16 DCSB OR & huge difference. I'd say 95% of the noise I was hearing is gone. Mine was worse the colder it was & its 60F now. Very happy with this repair.

Update: I was able to add some sound deadener to the lower back wall of the cab as well as under the rear seats this past Sunday. I wanted to add some to the c-pillars and the upper part of the back wall, but I ran out of time. The power window mechanism surprisingly takes up a decent chunk of area back there. I also left my pad pillar #5 at home... but I did have egg crate foam that I shoved into the passenger c-pillar and passenger cab mount bolt area.

Since its been so hot the past few days I have been driving with the windows all the way down and music up. This morning I was able to quickly test out 62-60 going down a hill. With the windows up, air off, and country music set at 15 I was barely able to hear the howl. I'll try to test the entire range this week, but :fingerscrossed: the sound deadener and foam helped!

Update 5/25: Now that I have put some more miles on the truck I can confirm my howl has been reduced to 59-61 at volume 15 or so. Most days I don’t even notice it as I have the windows down. I had the windows closed this morning for the first time in a while and was able to hear it, but it’s much more quiet. I might add some more foam here or there one day, but at least it’s a lot better now!

Taking Airwolf in Tuesday. Dampeners and springs. Shouldn’t wheel alignment be done as well when doing suspension work?

Well, I guess I have to eat my words. I drove about 60 miles of mainly rolling hills this afternoon. All back roads doing 55-63. Not sure if one of the dynamic dampers has worked loose or what, but the longer I drove the more I could hear the howl. I had the windows cracked and the radio over 20 and I could hear it clear as day. I also could hear it from 61-53 like before. Up until today I had it down to 59-61. Maybe it’s not a coincidence that I heard the howl this morning for the first time in a while. I’ll check the torque on the cab mounts in the morning and go from there. I guess mine could be doing what @Lt. Dangle did. :annoyed:

Bummer. I bet part of it is your ears have retrained to the noise. Keep banging on Toyota. I'm still pretty pleased with my results though. My high pitched noise is definitely gone.

I haven’t noticed mine coming back yet but must admit I’m not trying to hear it. Once I hear it, my OCD takes over and I’ll be miserable again.

I would if I knew it would do something. Three times it has been in for the howl. I’ve gotten the hint lol

I did let corporate know via email that I installed the TSB on my own along with sound deadener. They responded Monday that they would get back to me. Haven’t heard anything else since then though.

Yeah, that honestly could be it. But I drive the same route every morning and afternoon. Only yesterday did I notice it again. Just seems odd timing wise.

I checked the dampers this morning and they were tight. Went ahead and torqued them to spec. Drove up and down the road 5-6 times and the howl was back to the 58-61 range and pretty quiet. This was with the windows up, radio off, and back seats down! After that I did about 38 miles round trip country roads and it stayed about the same. I just did about 60 miles home with 55-60mph towards the end and it seemed louder and started around 56. I swear the longer I drive the more the howl returns. I guess harmonics can change with temperature, right? Although most say the colder it is the louder it is..

If I just get in my truck and drive I never notice it. If I think of this thread, I can hear it every time... it is a different tone and at a different speed, but there is a little noise still. Sounds exactly like tire noise now though. Pre tsb, it was always noticable.
    I still consider it fixed.
