That’s how I was up until yesterday. The howl wouldn’t even cross my mind when I drove post me installing the TSB. Yesterday it surprised me when I heard it. I had not noticed it in some days and got used to how quiet was! Ha

Even how it is now it’s a ton better than post TSB parts. I just want to know why it suddenly changed.

I think you need to document it just in case. I know it’s hard to take the time to get these rigs in to the shop this often, but if something goes wrong, documentation will help. I really think corporate Toyota is trying to fix this, or do whatever they can to at least make it better. It took some time, but it is going to take those of us who do not have a fix letting them know. Mine is barely audible at 58-59 mph, but today I didn’t hear it at all. Once I slip on some new, more aggressive shoes, I’ll consider it fixed!

This had been my experience too. It has become louder over the last few weeks for some reason. I did rotate my tires.

I'm not sad at all. Toyota had an issue. They are addressing it, or did. It's frustrating it took them as long as it did, but in my case it has been rectified. Most people are reporting similar feedback. Not everyone of course, but I'd say the vast majority are giving positive feedback on this fix.

Agreed. As we’ve all stated ad nauseum, it’s likley Toyota genuinely didn’t know what was going on at first either, hence all the rear diff replacements that led to the same noise once replaced. I’m more convinced now than ever that this has been a resonance issue all along and the key is to locate it and fix it. This TSB may not be the final fix for some, but it has made it far better for many people, me included. I’m happy. If it comes back I’ll contact corporate again and continue to encourage others to do the same. I think Toyota wants this fixed. They have nothing to gain from not doing everything they can to address this issue because this truck is early in the 3rd generation and I don’t see an all new truck with a truly different design coming for many years, based off how long the first 2 gens stayed around. There is too much money to made off these trucks to not get it right.

For what it's worth I wasn't saying either of you (or anyone) should feel sad about this.

I was saying that it's lame/sad/unfortunate/a shame that it took so long to get addressed in the first place, that the "fix" might not work for everyone, and that they aren't including all models in the lineup even though all models are affected.

You guys are paying a small fortune for new vehicles that don't even include goodies that other car buyers get in $17k civics. The least you can expect is solid power train components and a setup that doesn't whine like a mule, vibrate, etc.

Good luck. I'll keep following this thread because tbh this was the issue that broke the camel's back for me.

I have a 2017 DCSB OR, it has around 4K miles, I notice the high whine when getting on the highway and accelerating and it hits at a certain speed and then disappears. I go in for my first 5K service in a couple of months, any tips on how to address this with the dealership.

You have an Off Road which the TSB covers so you should be good! Just let them know you have a whine like noise from the rear at xx speed/range. They should drive it, confirm noise, and order parts!

Oops, I think I should have tagged you and not the Lt earlier. I thought he was the one to have the howl come back, but it was you.

Odd that it’s done this to only a few rigs. I guess I’ll drive with the windows farther down from now on haha

I think I’ll document this with Lentz’s office first when they get back to me. If i don’t hear back from them I’ll just call the lady I have been dealing with there.

If they ask me to go in again I guess I will. I just know I’ll get the same results. I also did the TSB so there is nothing else they can do. I guess they could replace the diff, but they stopped doing that months ago. Plus, my luck is obviously terrible. I’m sure the new diff would be ear splittingly loud ha

Thanks for the help, it is rather high pitched but disappears after I accelerate.

It could be that it needs more sound deadening, or who knows? They need to know about it and see and hear it so maybe they can tweak the fix. But, to me they need to fix all of them. Sorry about the bad luck.....

That sounds like something else. The howl
My rear diff leaked and it's not a sport. Imo, it's just the way it goes sometimes.

Still no love for the Access Cab. I'm dealing with corporate for the past few weeks and waiting for them to 'get back to me'.

Could need more for sure. I only added noico 80mil and some egg crate foam here and there.

I took apart my rear interior again this morning (I’m a pro now ha) and added some more egg crate foam pieces in the passenger C-pillar. Also have 3 layers of dense foam/rubber in there. Enough that it rests against the bottom of the seat belt retractor. I think it’s that corner area where it’s coming from. The passenger leaf spring seems to transmit more than the drivers (to my ear).

I agree they should fix them all. I would think they have to since all models can do it. I’ll contact the shop foreman this week, too. Maybe he will have some new news for us.
