Got Airwolf back last night. Like some have said the howl is about 90% gone. I’m good with that since you don’t hear it over the radio anymore. In fact, the radio drowns it out.

On a side note, the service advisor tried to tell me that I’m hearing tire noise as well from the “aggressive tread and deep sipes” my tires have. I still have the GY Wrangler Kevlars. I just gave him a look, signed my paperwork and waited for the valet to bring my truck.

3 weeks later with about 2,000 miles post TSB and the howl is still 90% gone... normally its more like 99% gone, but if I have the bed loaded down driving on rural roads I can still "occasionally" hear a faint howl but it's the sort of thing I would never have noticed if it hadn't been so prominent prior to the TSB. So far so good!

And my fuel pump is still smooth as butter (replaced the same time as the whine TSB performed!)

I think I'll be getting me a free pair of new leaf springs after I've worn my current ones over about 55K miles hah.

Pretty sure TSBs only apply during the 3/36 warranty time frame.

Took my Tacoma in for the 15K Toyota Care and told them about the rear howling noise. They didn't even drive it, just put it on the lift and then said its probably due to the TRD exhaust drone at 50-60mph. At my 20k service I'm taking a tech with me to show the noise and I'll even bring a copy of the TSB with so maybe they will actually acknowledge the howl. God I hate car dealerships. Sad part is I worked at that dealership for 3 years too.

The word "probably" would have raised my ire immediately.

3k mile follow up: I took my truck in for its 20K mile checkup (@22K) and for the first time ever, had no issues, no complaints for the service writer to address. It took 22K miles, but I feel like my truck is 99% sorted now. My whine has not changed since it was repaired. Still consider it fixed at probably 90-95% fixed. I have what sounds like tire noise around 45, but that's it.
    For now...

My noise is back and just as noisy at 57-60 mph. The only thing good about this truck is the resale value. After having a Frontier rental for 9 days, Toyota has lost me as a customer for life.

Update: One thing I didn’t mention after I got my Taco back was that I had a slight shutter when accelerating at lower to mid speeds. I thought maybe I had gotten some bad gas or something so I didn’t think anything of it. I have put another tank and a half of top tier gas in it since then and still have the shutter. I’m at 10,000 miles and some change. I had my TSB done with no leafs (long bed) and had the oil changed but noticed the shutter (almost like a miss) as soon as I got back. I have no idea what this is. Geez, something else....

So your noise went away some after the TSB and now it is back to what it was like pre TSB? If so how many miles did it take this to happen?

So an update from Jim Lentz’s office. I have been playing phone tag with them since last Thursday about when they will extend the TSB to non TRDs like my truck. Yes, I did the TSB on my own, but I’d like them to get their act in gear for everyone else.

I got a long voicemail today from Diaema with a final update. She said she had been working with a product quality group and a management team with Toyota on my specific case. Long story short same old same old. They are not moving forward with fixing non TRDs. Pretty much it is what it is.

I’ll still continue to push them on the issue, but it sounds like Toyota is done dealing with the howl.

I wonder if they disconnected your battery for the TSB? Maybe it’s trying to relearn itself some? Then again a few tanks should have straightened that out.

Your experience is why I really don’t want to use Toyota care. I can change my oil, rotate tires, and top off fluids for probably cheaper (definitely faster) than my time wasted with having the dealer do it. Especially if the dealer causes more issues like scratched wheels, over tightened oil filter, etc.

I have to run premium in my truck because of this. Look into the CPK issue if yours wasn't TSB'd for it already. I use Costco gas which is Top Tier and my truck just does not like regular. Basically try a tank of Premium and see what happens. If nothing else its a really lazy way to eliminate the motor from the equation.

I wouldn’t think they would have disconnected the battery but I’ll read back through the TSB. This is really getting on my nerves now. I had nothing else wrong with my truck. Geez....:)

I’ll try some premium and didn’t think of that. I run mostly Costco too. I also ran a tank of SUNOCO, which is really good gas, but the tank before that was Entec, which around here is straight up trash. I’ll feed her some premium and hope for the best.

Also, would my truck start this now with gas issues if it’s never done it before?

After reading about the CPS sensor I’m thinking that may be my issue. Back to the shop I go.

Beats me. My truck is supposed to use regular, but runs like trash on it.
Some people are just lucky I guess.

Obviously I’d like for premium to fix it but fear it may be the CPS.
