Mine is a 2018 SR5 built in Mexico December 2017 as well. I think everyone minus the TRDs will be stuck with howl unless you want to pay for it like I did. Even then it doesn’t cure it all. Toyota probably figures people will just give up on it after a while and they won’t have to fork out more cash to take care of it for everyone.

Guess I'm living with it for now. I'm wondering if a howl at most speeds though, not just highway speeds, is indicative of something more going on. My 2017 was probably the last of the batch as it is from 10/17 in Texas.

This is my 4th Tacoma ('95 1/2, '96, '08 amd '18), and It'll be my last if Toyota doesn't man up and fix the damn thing.

The TSB worked well for me. I don’t even notice the faint leftover howl anymore. However, if you are not covered by the TSB I’d encourage everyone to contact Toyota Corporate. Maybe if enough people speak up they will extend the TSB or address the real problem. Early on several people had their rear diffs replaced only for the howl to be just as bad or worse, so I don’t think this is anything other than a resonance issue that Toyota needs to figure out for all models. Best of luck and keep those comments coming. Maybe there will be a one size fits all fix soon for all models.

Has contacting corporate gotten people anywhere? I'm so exhausted by dealer trips and other issues with the truck. Just had my rear axle replaced for another TSB that didn't seem to do much at all, for anything really. My dealer is gonna send all their staff running for the hills if they see me walk in again. Driveline vibration? TSB wasn't active for my VIN, so they couldn't do anything. Rear howl? "All our rear diffs howl, buddy."

It's reached a point where I don't give a shit at all, even though I do. I'm leasing the truck so there's light at the end of the tunnel. Some days I love this truck, other days want to drive it into a guard rail and let it burn. Never know what kinda mood my transmission will be in, if she wants to hum out of her ass, slam into gear unexpectedly, or if the brakes will decide to feel like shit. Everyday I walk outside and pray the stars are aligned that I'll have a nice drive. More often than not, I do, but still, it's really annoying. /rant .

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had all these issues. If enough people contact corporate it will at least bring even more attention to the matter. Bug the crap out of them. Don’t let them off the hook and tell them how you feel. I would have to think and hope that Toyota would want to get this fixed. The more people that contact them the more resources this issue takes up so it will get some attention. The Taco is a cash cow for Toyota and the competition is heating up so I’d think they want the kinks worked out of this truck sooner than later. We had at least one guy on here Lemon Law his truck for this. I was going to do the same if mine wasn’t fixed to my satisfaction but I’m ok now. Hang in there and good luck.

Thanks for the reply, man. I will sleep on it. I just don't have the energy at the moment, my wife is actually starting to get pissed at me for how fixated I am on crap with this truck! Just trying to enjoy it, really. Too much other crap going on in my life that this really needs to be at the bottom.

    Happy 4th!

Happy 4th to you as well. Sounds like you are going through the same thing I did. My wife was not happy with me fixating on mine either but I’m that kind of guy. Ha! She tried to get me to sell it and even stopped riding in it. But all is well now. Only you know how much time you have to spend on this but I’d at least let them know. Email Lentz and Akio if you have to. I did on my second gen issues and it worked. I do wish you the best.

Thanks OP for the document and info.
I have been having an issue since day 1 and the dealer had no solution for me.
I forwarded the the TSB PDF to the service manager. Although I am in Canada I requested he check if there is a similar TSB for us and there is. He is also ordering new leaf springs as well, so I'm happy!

I had my 2017 SR Access cab manual transmission, in for the 10k service. My whine started at 7k miles or so and at 60 to 65 mph. Its fairly loud.
My dealer had 4 techs look at the rear diff and they called Toyota the reply was.....
That's just the way it is.....
I told the service rep wow that is a good answer. no mention of a TSB. This issue was documented on my record for future use.
So I will print this out for my 15k service.
Mean while I think I will change the diff fluid with some synthetic fluid just to see.....

My wife didn’t get why I couldn’t just ignore the noise. I just couldn’t. It’s not that simple.

Good luck and I hope they help you. I don’t think the TSB addresses your truck yet but I’d give it a try too. To me this TSB should address any truck that does it.

So my truck started getting louder TSB. Almost pre TSB louder.

Changed the fluid in the diff with amsoil 75w-90

Fluid that came out was shiny/cloudy with all the metal shavings. Which I know is normal/semi-normal. There were a lot of shavings... no chunks though.

I cleaned the drain plug and got a grape size mass of metal shavings.

Anyway my diff has quieted back down to post TSB levels. Knock on wood but I feel it gets quieter every time I drive it.

I have a 3k mile road trip coming up so we’ll see how she does.

That is what I hoping for. How much fluid did yours take?
Maybe its a wear in issue....once we have some miles on them....the diff will quiet down some.
My truck was dead quiet for the first 3k......even my wife was impressed how quiet it was.

    A little over 4 qts.

My truck was kinda loud at 500 miles. They replaced the diff and it became obnoxiously loud. I got the TSB, springs included and it helped for a little while but it got loud again recently.

So I changed my oil and I’m hoping for the best.

So, I'm pretty sure my truck suffers from this. It's a '17 OR D-Cab and a very noticeable howl that can be produced on command under the exact conditions described.

Now, my question is, what issues will the 1" block I installed on the back cause? Will they deny the TSB repair? I'm wondering if anyone in a similar situation has had the TSB performed. I figured, at the very least, I would have to supply the aftermarket U-Bolts.
