Been thinking of a new SR5 short bed as it should be a bit softer ride than the TD Sport I test drove. This vibration had turned me off. Had Highlander for 9 yrs 130,000 mls and tow 4000lb boat combined weight with trailer, no probs with Toyota only changed water pump recently as it was noisy. Didn't want to risk it failing. Now have to do more research on trucks. maybe Ridgeline or go for the F 150. I really did want the Taco.

If I could do it over again I'd do the F-150. In fact, I probably will sometime soon. Just need to get to the point where I'm ready to accept the loss. Not quite there yet grrrr.

Brought my truck in for braking issues/grinding noise (only the former resolved), and casually mentioned the rear-end howl. Service manager pretty much ignored me. At first I regretted leasing the truck, now I'm counting down the months...29 months to go.

In my opinion and personal experience, this truck has been shit with a multitude of issues. I'm sure many, many other people have good trucks, but my list of issues keeps on building. This howl is a constant reminder of all of that. Don't mean to knock any on here, either...I stress that it is just my OPINION.

I just bought a 2019 Tacoma Off-Road 4x4 manual and I am getting the same off-throttle whine in 5th and 6th gears. It's just loud enough to be annoying.

Slight throttle. Press more and it goes away and let off and it goes away?

Like there is a howl honey spot?

I really want to hope that they’re not still pumping these out with this problem.

When feathering the throttle it shows up. Very lightly on throttle or off for me. The most prominent point as per forum members is about 58mph give or take. But it also shows up elsewhere.

Wow Toyota still hasn’t applied the fix on the 2019 models ? It’s been several months since they did the tsb on my 2017 trd dCLB OR and it’s still gone haven’t heard it since . But the whine really wasn’t that loud to begin with . Plus I got the duratracs shortly after the tsb so all I hear is the tires Lol.
My suggestion is get aggressive AT tires . You get tire howl which will take off the rear diff whine off your mind and your truck will look good. It’s a win win solution !

My dealer’s techs can’t hear the noise according to my service manager.

I have a 2017 TRDOR MT. I just had the T-SB-0013-18 done on my truck(truck was at the dealer for 50 days while they waited for one of the TSB parts).

The diff gear whine is still happening after the TSB. It’s nearly as bad as pre TSB.

This has to be a gear design issue, gear machining issue, or gear mesh(shim) issue. It will take an extreme and unpractical amout of dampening to eliminate the noise from inside of the cab.

Hopefully a new TSB comes out for a complete gear change. Otherwise we may just have live with the noise.

I didn’t think of the lemon law. Toyota did provide me with a rental car the whole time. They also are covering two months worth of my payments. The cost of the rental car, TSB cost, and payments totaled to about $5000. So this was costly for Toyota and in the end not much came out it.

If a dealer has your vehicle for +30 days and you still have the problem, I think you are lemon law eligible. I'm not an attorney, but it might be worth looking into.

Update: Mine is just as bad post TSB. I'm disgusted with this truck. It's past the mileage limit for Lemon status.

I dropped my truck off last night for the howling (again). Honestly, I now take back everything I said about it being better. It’s not quite as loud but is now clearly audible at several different speeds. I’m bummed and STILL refuse to mount my new wheels and tires. My plan is now that this is documented again maybe I’ll mount them up but the stock wheels are actually starting to grow on me.... Also, I had the crosswind TSB done last but nothing changed. I couldn’t even tell they changed out the seal on the driver’s side so they get to try again. I’m not sure where I go from here....maybe mud tires? Lol

So now for the play by play. These idiots can’t hear the wind noise at the driver’s window and are acting like a version of “who’s on first” when it comes to me explaining that the window noise is NOT the same noise as the rear differential noise. Silly me but I thought those were different words and areas of the truck. Something fishy is going on. I had to explain several times about the whining noise from the rear and they are now acting like they have no idea what I’m talking about. As long as it’s documented I don’t really care at this point.

So the dealer said they needed to keep my truck another day and I told them that was fine. They said they are talking with Toyota technical assistance and they are comparing my diff noise to the noise to the trucks on the lot. I told them to knock themselves out but this is 2018, not 1968, and diffs shouldn’t make that kind of noise. The tech advisor laughed and agreed. It’s clear that Toyota is trying to take the “they all do it approach” and that won’t work with me.

I am also getting the AC Fan service campaign done.

With regards to my front driver side wind noise they are “taking measurements of my doors and sending them to Toyota “ in order to try to fix it.

Overall I think the dealer is trying to get the truck fixed but it’s clear corporate is calling the shots. One more service visit and I’m calling them.....

Disclaimer: I want my truck fixed. I don’t want to have to keep this crap up. It takes time and energy that I cannot spare, unless forced to, to keep this dance up. They will either fix it, get another shot, or I have some decisions to make. Mud tires are still on the table....LOL
