Mine has the TSB parts from the factory, but the noise is still constant when on/off throttle around 50-55. It was very obvious to the GM that went for the ride along this morning. The mechanic didn't seem to hear it.

hello, just joined. hope everyone is having a good holiday. I have a 2018 2wd 2.7 auto. extra cab with 3000 miles. I did have the whine in the rear end, brake problems and the laser cruise control kept locking up the rear brakes when another car changed lanes in front of me. took it to my dealer and they replaced the ring and pinion and replaced the rear drums and shoes. perfect brakes now and no whine in the rear, but they couldn't fix the problem with it locking up the rear brakes. i have owned over 30 toyotas over the past 40 years. always great vehicles. I am not very happy with the new tacoma or Toyota quality any longer. i had it on the lift the other day and can see the problems with the frame rust. there are hundreds of small welding slag spots that the paint didn't cover [ very cheap and thin paint] that are starting to rust. the truck is only 6 months old. i live in las vegas nv and the truck has not even been in the rain yet. i have started to file off the slag and touch up the bare spots. i bought a new honda ridgeline and i have to say for the first time in my life, the honda is quite a bit better in just about every way. i still own 5 Toyotas [ 97 t100, 99 avalon, 2016 corolla, 2016 camry and this tacoma] and don't think i will try another.

I just got my Taco from the dealer today. The work order says the work was completed on 12/19. Toyota pretty much tore my truck apart for 13 solid days. I got near daily updates from corporate but chose to stay quiet until all was done. Like many others, the howling/whining has been driving me crazy. My corporate contact stated that my pinion angle was “off” and that my gears were damaged. They replaced the rear leaf springs (I have a long bed), replaced the rear differential, and as you can see from the repair order, did a few other things. The noise is gone, at least so far, but then again I had no noise when my truck was new as it started around 1000 miles, so I’ll reserve judgment for later.

I am not trying to start a debate but I do find it interesting that this noise is summarily dismissed as only a “resonance” yet my howling rear differential was confirmed to be bad and subsequently replaced, resulting in no howling. I’m still trying to get the Field report as the repair order doesn’t relay half of what I was told, but I didn’t expect it to. To me Toyota truly tried to fix my truck and I’m grateful for their efforts. The corporate contact was open and candid. The dealer obviously had been muzzled and wouldn’t say a word, deferring to corporate the whole time but they did what they were instructed to do without question.

The only thing that seems to be bothering me now is a really bad surging that had gone away after the tranny TSB. Does anyone out there know if pulling the tranny could have undone the flash I had done previously? If I can get the surging fixed now I’m a happy camper, so long as the noise doesn’t return. :)

That's the most writing I have ever seen on a work order lol.

As for the resonance issue, I had the TSB done and it fixed my truck, yours decided to go a different direction haha. It is possible to have seperate issues cause the same symptom though. You even said yourself that yours was better after the TSB was done, until it wasn't. You might just be blessed... There also might be tons of trucks out there with the exact same problem you had, maybe not.

I hope your truck is good to go, i'm sure you will keep us updated.

Good points for sure. I’m thinking others may or may not have the same issue as me. Apart from pushing corporate to do something there is no way to know BUT I really didn’t have to push very hard and they were very helpful.

Hopefully it puts this matter to bed. Now you can put your wheels and tires on...

On second thought, maybe wait a few miles lol.

I’m sorry to hear that. The one thing my dealer did say before they were clearly muzzled by corporate was that my noise was not normal and that it was from the rear differential. I’d say keep on them until you get some help. I simply told them mine didn’t do it for the first 1,000 miles of life but then started. How would that be normal? Something happened that caused this and had it done this when it was new I would have never bought it.

Would changing a leaf pack change the pinion angle if there was a slight variance in the height each leaf pack provides?

Carried my 2018 in today for this. Dealer is ordering parts from the TSB to repair. Hope that fixes the noise.

My SR5 whined from day one. Dealer replaced diff at 1086 miles after tsb did nothing. Over 4K miles now and still silent.

I assume they would have disconnected the battery when doing work such as pulling the transmission. There's no way that would cause your truck to "revert" back to an earlier ECM calibration though. Changing the calibration or "flashing" the truck is something that is done on purpose, with Techstream software (I've done it). Did your dealer apply any updates while your truck was there?

Perhaps some short term values got reset because of a battery disconnect, and your truck is back to school. Give it a few hundred miles and see what happens.

Thanks for the peace of mind as far as the flash goes. Unfortunately, it feels like something is wrong back there. It’s like it’s slipping if that makes sense.

They pulled the tranny per the work order but didn’t put a new one in. I forgot what post, I posted it on but something is not right. Also, with people in the cab the trucks shakes like crazy under moderate braking but doesn’t with just me in the cab. I have no idea what’s going on but wonder if the leafs were secured. I don’t know.
