I've had the TSB done for the howling diff. New leaf springs and dampeners installed. The noise didn't go away but was a little more quiet for a while but now it's just as loud as it was before. So annoying

I don't think Toyota wants to fix this issue or has engineers bright enough to understand the issue.. I owned 2 2019's at this point. Bought an sr5 4x4 double cab short bed from the dealer with 9 miles on it and within a week noticed a driveline wobble when slowing down from 25-15mph. Right then i knew something with driveshaft wasn't right..i went back instantly and brought my concerns up to the sales guys, and naturally they didn't give 2 fu*ks.. So i lost it on the entire place. They settled on getting me into a trd sport 4x4 double cab short bed with upgraded options for 2k more.. Ok no problem, i test drove that truck and it was fine, no wobble,or noises in the drive train with 45 miles on it..
Well What do you know 187 miles on the odometer and there is a whine noise from the rear when decelerating from 60-50 mph and the wobble at 25-15 mph appeared. Took it in and they blamed the factory running boards that came installed factory (lmao) wind noise and the vinyl bed cover for the rear noise... Jokers right? (Or lazy incompetent mechanics). Anyway I'm 2 receipts short of a lemon law claim since these jokers don't want to resolve the problem.. Let's see where this goes..
I was gonna do the whole shim speal and even the 3 degree pinion shims on my own since I am a fabricator and mechanic (currently built a 68 c10 with a 2jz) to see if this resolves the issue, but let's face it, i just spent 38k on a brand new truck, why that fu*k am i touching it?

Ok rant over and thanks for anyone who actually read this entire post.

Now I know why the guy I bought my 2016 from sold it a 48k (past general warranty... as if it would help anyway). After reading the above posts I'll either live with it or trade it in for a vin range with better parts. Live and learn.
    Thanks guys.

I don't think a VIN range is gonna help you much.

Just took receipt of my 2019 TRD OR. I'm assuming this whining is significant enough that I would have heard it if I had it??

Also, with less than 300 miles, I guess it's too soon to tell...

    Cheers,

The sound can vary significantly from truck to truck. I can only hear it when the temp above 50 degrees.

I think mine is still somewhat OK. I can’t tell because it’s hard to concentrate with all the surging at low throttle. Lol

Got my 2018 TRD OR DCSB last June, and I've heard the "whine" since a couple weeks in. Only happens between roughly 53 - 58 MPH, mostly when accelerating. Until now I didn't realize there was a TSB out for my model year.

I'm at almost 18K and the whining hasn't gotten any worse. It's a vaguely annoying quirk, but I can live with it. Is this noise something I should be gravely concerned about?

Probably not worth worrying about. I have a similar story as you. I can live with it because it’s not very noticeable and is secondary to resonance. The TSB seems to have mixed success so not worth it to me. My 2cents.

Did you ever find out what was causing this noise? I have the same exact truck and mine does the same thing. I haven’t taken it in to the dealer yet. Wondering if you have figured out what is causing the problem.

I'm assuming it's the rear differential as everyone else is reporting. Unfortunately, I have noticed it getting "worse" in the sense that it's now making that noise at lower speeds, too. Hasn't really gotten any louder, but I'm gonna have the dealer take a look at it during my 20k service.

I can live with the noise, but if something's getting chewed up back there, I want to fix it!

Let us know how the dealer deals with it.

It’s a mixed bag on what works. I have 35k on my truck and it still howls. Seems quieter recently though, which is nice.

For sure. I should be going within the next 2 to 3 weeks.

My 2019 TRD OR is already howling with 150 miles on it. Outstanding.

Mine has been very quiet this winter. Oddly quiet really. I have a feeling once summer is here the howl will be back in full force just like last year. Truck just crossed 10k miles today and has had the howl since mile 20.

It's unbelievable to me that this is still happening. Truly remarkable. There's something big at play here for Toyota to not be addressing this at the source.

I had mine rear end replace at 500 miles on my 2016, I now have 38K and it still howls. Also had the springs replaced and such. My dad has a 2014 he bought new and his has always whined too.
