Mines at the dealer now in part for this. I give it about a 30% chance of being diagnosed or even found. I'm gonna call it right now, they will say the noise is either from my cap/rack, or tires. Nothing ever comes easy with the dealer I use.

I have to tip my hat to my service dept manager. He was upfront with everything from the start. The sound deadening trick that he tried a couple of weeks ago was an off the cuff attempt to find a fix for me. Ill have to find out who to talk to and give him an attaboy.

Good to know. My dealer had me test drive with the mechanic who confirmed the noise. When I asked them to state that in the service notes they gave serious push back. That was months ago. They claimed " normal operating procedure. Now I don't have to have them test drive again. Sweeeeet.

Against all odds, it seems like they are ordering the parts for this per the service manager... I'm stunned. I'll wait until I see it in writing though before I get excited.

    Edit:
Yep, service writer just called and confirmed. Amazing.

Got the call yesterday afternoon, parts are in and the TSB "repair" is scheduled for tomorrow. My dealership is actually taking care of me on this one, as I'm not supposed to be eligible for the TSB (double cabs only last I saw). Will update when she's done..

Interesting. My truck definitely does this. The only reason it bothered me slightly is because I thought it was related to the leaking diff issue but now that this is out I think the two are completely separate issues. And it makes sense now that I think about it.

Their remedy is perhaps the most telling thing...they aren't trying to fix the diff, at all. They are just trying to make it so you can't hear it. Which is a good thing imo because it means there's nothing wrong with the diff.

In fact I would go so far as to say diffs whine under normal operation. Is what it is but most manufacturers combat that with sound deadening/bushings etc. Perhaps Toyota didn't quite hit the mark on the BD22 diff.

I can attest to diff whine in my other car...never heard diff whine before I swapped in solid differential bushings and now it's clear as day. Sounds just like the Taco diff whine except 10x louder and at almost any speed.

To me it's not even close to worth letting some dealership hacks mess with my truck to try and mute the whine but I suppose it's nice Toyota made a TSB for those who are bothered by it.

This is almost word for word what three mechanics told me. It's an NVH issue, not a mechanical one.

No one is really arguing over what is causing it now but, for those that thought it was a diff, what is the big deal? Why was Toyota swapping out diffs for people? Maybe they thought it was a bad diff as well (initially) until they figured out it was just a resonance issue. As I’ve said many times, my 16 Yukon has a diff whine at 55 but it’s nowhere near as bad as my Taco. Either way, more noise is resonating than Toyota expected when they designed the truck or we wouldn’t be here. My position is clear, make the noise go away by any means necessary (short of handing me noise canceling headphones) and I’m a happy camper. Thanks for all the feedback.

My only guess is that because this came to light at the exact same time they had the leaky rear end problems, there may have been an assumption that it may be damage related to that issue.

This is precisely where I was at. There's a big difference to me between a noisy diff and a flawed diff with potential for catastrophic failure during use. One is a major concern and one is a slight annoyance at worst.

Right, they now know the cause of the noise and have a fix or solution for it so that should make for alot of happy truck owners!

And, not to rehash all this, many of us at times were giving this our best guess (to include many wrong guesses). For what it’s worth, the noise at first sounded just like the initial noise from my diff that seized up on an old Chevy many years ago. The only difference is that the Chevy noise got so bad until it would literally run you out of the truck. It was obvious something was really wrong. My Taco noise stayed the same so deep down I knew it wasn’t likely to seize. Im just looking forward to getting the time to get mine in and get the noise fixed. I’ve also learned a lot on here and appreciate all the feedback. Noise begone! Peace....

Maybe Toyota wanted some documented noisy diffs to check out?

They swapped out my gears twice. The second with Toyota rep measuring tolerances. The diff whined like hell after this one. Found out that any gear replacement is done with refurbished parts. Go figure. After TSB the noise is not completely gone but you have to listen closely to hear it. If I had the original set of gears now I probably wouldn’t hear it at all

I only had the one replacement but I feel the same way. Original gears were nowhere near as loud as the replacement diff they gave me.

Interesting to know they used refurbished gears. Its like musical diffs to see what you end up with.

Probably gears from one of those that had oil leak issues

Has anyone had any luck getting the deadbeats at your dealers to order the parts before you take your truck in?

If not, what a dipshit waste of time to have to take off work to take your shitheap of a truck in for some low life degenerate to "diagnose" that it has the issue before they order the $8 parts kit (long bed) that impacts many trucks, despite the (soon to burn in hell) service tech at my dealer lying to my face "mm, nope, never heard of the howl noise at highway speed."
