I wouldn't sweat too much about used gears from a low oil diff. The bottom of ring gear is large enough to dip into the oil and bring it up to the pinion. Gears just need a replenished supply. That's why grease works on some machinery applications.

There's also methods to remove surface wear on gearing such as superfinishing. These would be better than new since ring and pinion gears are not typically ground after heat treatment.

It's the bearings that need more oil to remove the heat being generated. Plus the pinion bearings are located higher up so they are affected the most on low oil levels.

I did not, as soon as I mentioned the TSB they went straight to "you have to bring it in to get looked at" and wouldn't listen to anything else I said. I would understand that stance if I didn't have any of the reported symptoms in my previous service visits.

I was going in for scheduled maintenance anyway, but it bugged me more that something documented in my last two services was not present during their 5 mile test drive. Ended up doing a drive along with the service manager and was able to produce it right outside the dealership. Just waiting for the parts to arrive.

Dealership gives lifetime power train warranty here. If gears go bad I’ll get new ones. It’s quiet now so I’m happy

Welp, the dealer didn't install the parts they ordered. Got a call, this time it was the tech that got the W/O for my truck. He said they couldn't install the parts because they were concerned that they weren't meant for my access cab, and that the TCI was for double cabs atm. He asked if I would mind coming in so he could ride along to be sure we were on the same page. Luckily I have a good boss and work is literally 2 min from the dealership!
Long story short he heard the whine and noted the speed and what I was doing with the throttle at the time. We had a good discussion as to the reasons for not installing the parts, among them the obvious discrepancy that would be clear to Toyota when they look at the paperwork and my VIN (access cab, not double cab). He seemed more concerned that the problem may not be sorted out correctly and that we should wait, contact corporate and be sure.
Anyway, I'm not pissed at all.. mainly because the tech was a good guy and took the time to understand my complaint. We're not done, just on hold for now..

Thanks OP @Murrayb4 for the post and sharing the TSB. I took my truck and a copy of the TSB to the dealer today and had the Service Manager come along for a ride. He called me back within a half hour and said they were ordering the parts and would call me when the parts were in to schedule the install. I am still going to add additional sound deadening/dampening material once I get it back along the entire back cab panel, but I am happy Toyota is taking the initiative to do the TSB! I will report back once the TSB work is completed.

Had my 25k service today and asked the dealer to look into this TSB as well. They are ordering the parts and will schedule service once they arrive. Having the door seal wind noise TSB done at the same time.

Sounds like the parts for the diff whine are in high demand and on back order. Could be 2 months or so I was told. Sounds like every truck gets new leaf springs with the TSB, even DCLB’s like mine.

Mine was done last week. Noise is reduced, and only audible between 55 and 60 MPH. My truck was the first done at my dealership, so they had it all day, and I got to drive a Rav4...:annoyed::censored:.

I'm still able to hear it, but I'm happy, plus can't beat getting a new leaf pack on a 36,000 mile truck :mudding:

How loud is it now compared to before the TSB? Did you do the radio volume test? Haha

It's about half as loud, maybe a little quieter, and I used to be able to hear it from 40 to 70 MPH, with the loudest being around 57. I'm happy with the decrease in sound/range of the sound for now. I never really did a "radio volume test", as I could still hear it before, no matter what volume I had my radio at.

    YMMV

Wow, 30mph range is the most I have heard of. Good to hear they were able to quiet it down so much! Did the dealer say anything to you that the noise is still there post TSB?

I didn't inform them. They did the fix, and I'm happy. No need to waste my time, or their's, as they called my noise engine noise when I complained about it a year ago. If Toyota comes out with another TSB, and it applies to me, I'll take it back in, but I'm currently out of my bumper to bumper warranty.

Sounds like a good plan! I can hear mine between 53-61 on decel and when feathering. If they extend the TSB to my year/model ( :fingerscrossed: )I think I will be happy with the results!

I'm curious to find out what the difference is in the new leaf springs mentioned in this TSB. I definitely have the noise in my '18.

I'm in no rush. It's not a dangerous thing. I'll just take my truck in when they call to schedule. My only want to get it done quickly is so I can put my new suspension on.

anyone have better pic or description of the location they install inner cab sound dampening materials at? I want to do the entire rear cab panel but don't want the dealer removing it when they do the TSB work, or make excuses that my mod screwed them up with their work. Thanks.

I think if you look at the TSB materials it shows a pic. I was thinking the same thing.
