New Comparison of Mid-Size Trucks. Tacoma still is king of off-road!

Check out this article from USA TODAY:

I don't get the "can't afford a full-size" headline. Outside of some of the more crazy full-size configurations, they cost about the same as the mid-size.

My 17 Tacoma cost the same as I paid for my every option LTZ Silverado in 2015 after rebates. Hell, my brother paid more for a canyon than a comparable optioned Sierra.

Yep, just put a deposit down on an 18 but could have had a Nissan Titan Pro 4X for the same with the incentives that are on offer currently.

It costs nearly the same to build a small car / truck as it does a large one. The full size market has so many buyers (that don't use them to their potential) that there is a massive economy of scale. So, real sales prices between full and medium size are about the same. It's the full size owners that get hosed in operating costs that almost never get considered when buying. Everything from MPGs to maint / service to depreciation costs more.

But then on the range toppers, some of those are just shy of six figures and there is not much price movement there.

It's just a shitty article title. Looks like they must be comparing the cheapest low end mid-size pickup offering to the most expensive full-size in all likelihood.

Yeah, I'm still surprised at how they decided to make the ranger look. They should have just made it look like a smaller f150.

Amazing engine selection choices in that Ranger.

It looks like ford saw the 3rd gen Tacoma, and said “hold my beer”.

Kind of like how the Ridgeline looks like an Odyssey with the back cut out, the new Ranger kind of looks like an Escape with a bed tacked on.

I just don't get what Ford of all companies (since they know trucks) was thinking.

I found there was about a $10,000 difference in price between the TRD OR double cab Tacoma to same trim Crewmax Tundra when I was getting my Tacoma.

Ugh, that Ranger is fugly as hell. Looks like they're trying to be way too slick with it. The old Rangers looked pretty nice to me; I don't get this awful redesign...

Couldn't agree more. Like many others have stated already, a full-size isn't far off in price. I didn't settle by buying a mid-size, I bought based on what I wanted.

How do you like the look of the Raptor variant though? I don't love the look of the Ranger, but like the Ranger Raptor personally

X2, if I needed to tow and haul a lot of stuff I would have gone full size. But I wanted something more nimble around town and on the trails, so I went with the Tacoma.

I don't think it looks much different to me, honestly. It looks better, but the basic lines of the truck still look like they're from a crossover, to me.

Interesting, I don't see that at all, but hey if we all thought the same it'd be boring.

Well I mean, adding more more aggressive looking trim helps, but it doesn't change the silhouette of the truck, which is the problem. From the front of the truck, to the back of the cab - the lines to me look right out of a small crossover.
