I get up to 26 mpg in my Sport 4WD 6MT. EPA only rates it for 21mpg on the highway.

Ive also owned a 2nd gen manual. Prefer the power in the 4.0l but creature comforts in 3rd gen.

Well I was looking at a bunch of campers that I could tow with the 4 cylinder. They are so small. But if I had a 6 cylinder I could tow a 4200 lbs camper easy, and they are big enough I think. A the donkey tank is 100 gal, it's against DOT regulations to haul more than that at a time in a vehicle not designed to commercially haul flammable liquids. Jet a is 7 lbs gal, thats 800 lbs if you add 100 for the tank and pump. That puts me at 5000, with 1500 left for stuff in the camper, fuel for truck, ect.ect.

Get the 3rd gen manual op. I had a 2nd gen v6 manual and now a 3rd gen v6 manual. The 4.30 gears, smoother gearbox, and better feel make it much more pleasant. Everyone talks about the low end torque and it’s more of a result of computer programming. The 2nd gen had more pop and jump initially. But the 3rd gen is more powerful after 2500 rpms and there is dynos that prove this. What really makes it obvious is the 3.5’s ability to accelerate in 6th at interstate speeds. The 4.0 honestly falls on its face when you pass 2500 rpms.

You may want to look into putting new leaf packs on with that much weight in the back. Tacoma's are notorious for their "flat" packs, even when brand new. I put a Dakar set on mine with my lift, love it.

How often are you planning on towing? The Tacoma can do that but I doubt you would be very comfortable doing it often, you may want to also consider a larger truck.

Yeah I assembled my own "bastard" packs for my reg cab out of 3/4 ton leaf springs from a Chevy. Works a treat.

Yeah I had a 2014 f250 fx4 diesel to do it all with, it was just way too big to get down some of the trails to get a good clearing in the mountains that was logistically a good spot.

Most current Lexus models will do that too, such as the IS 250 F-Sport I had before my trading in for the Tacoma, but you had to know how to turn Traction Control completely off in order for it to bounce off the rev limiter.

Same with the 1st Gen V6 MT as well. My new 3rd Gen MT hauls ass down the freeway, that 6th gear puts it at 80mph with no effort. As for low end I'm not concerned, plenty of oomph if needed for towing or off roading. MT for the win!
