I just got mine, 2011 4x4 dc sb trd sport w/jbl step rails and tinted windows, got it for 29k. Was looking at used 2009-2010 w/24k or so and they were asking 28K w/o the jbl package I wanted which is about a 1k option. I dont know how much I could have chewed them down on the used ones, but I didn't think they would budge as much as the new. Plus, unless it was certified pre-owned I wouldn't have got the 1k college grad deal. No brainer for me. Not downing the used ones, I almost settled for less of a truck and made an offer on a nice certified pre-owned, but thought before I do, to try to work a deal on the one I really want and so it was done.

Again, I got a great deal on MY certified Tacoma and its in great condition. I can only attest to my specific vehicle but in general a certified vehicle is a nice compromise between a brand new vehicle and a used. Thats all.

If you are ok with that "dirt" then that is your choice. I, on the other hand have been there before and am not willing to accept that. In this same thread you mention resale on older trucks and we do not see that as being the case in the NorthEast. As a side note, I bought a 1 yr old car that had a clean carfax and dealer history and it turned out to have been hit (without record) and a POS.

Carmax prices were not all that good when I checked, I saw better prices elsewhere

I look used for a while before I decided to go new and from my standpoint this just made the most sense. But yeah maybe for others this isn't the best choice.

As far as understanding the financials when buying new, I knew exactly what I was stepping into; as one should. I knew how much I would pay for the truck, what my interest rate would be, and how much interest I would be paying over the life of the loan. Financials is something I am very familiar with and when it came time to make the purchase, new in my opinion was the better option for me when comparing the purchase of used.

The bottom line is this, the best decision really just depends on the person and their individual circumstance.

Its a nice truck, pretty good deal too. I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to prove. I'd still take my warrantied truck with my options (I do want a locker though...) at the price I paid. To ME the extra cash was worth it.

If he can more power to him, no chance of finding a second generation with those options in my area for that price. I tried.

Special low interest rates on new vs high rates on used makes sense for new vehicle purchase to me.

I've stopped reading this thread at the beginning of the fourth page, because its turned into a pissing match.

You realize that some of you guys are not even comparing comparable issues?

My economics 101 teacher at Vanderbilt used to say that EVERY decision should be weighed by cost versus benefit. If the benefit outweighs the cost, then you should make the purchase. He also spoke of non-monetary costs -- costs you can't put a price on. For some people, "piece of mind" for buying new costs $1,000. For others -- say someone who has had a terrible previous experience -- it's $10,000. If you want to get right down to the nitty-gritty, buying used is the most affordable option, all things equivalent. Some people are JUST looking for an affordable option, not THE MOST affordable one.

And all this crap about being a naive young person is just plain crap. I'm a 20 year old grad student who owned a perfectly fine vehicle and saved regularly for my retirement. I also just cashed out for my 1995.5 Tacoma as a toy. Sure, I don't need the toy, but there's nothing any of you can say to me to prove that it was a bad decision.

Everyone needs to get off their high horses and respect whatever reasons each other have for making the purchase they decided to make. A poll can only be accurate if the people participating in it are not being bashed for their opinions.

I got the same financing rate (through Toyota) for my used truck as would be available on a new one, since it was factory certified.

how long ago was that? Recently I was offered a 2009 TRD OR with 52K miles for $24.5k and thought that was high.

it means that 101 is a basic college course and there is much to learn after that. consider ROI or TCO and not just the fun factor.

Maybe I'm giving the general population too much credit but I assume things like "Return on Investment" and "Total Cost of Ownership" are factored into their decision.
