newbie mpg model question

I'm totally new to the idea of having a truck! I own a veloster turbo which i pay about $30-$40 on gas and i usually get gas every two weeks. Im sick of not having space and i need the room for my family. Im really considering a 2014 tacoma prerunner 4x2 2.7l 4 cyl but I'm just curious how much gas do you guys go thru in two weeks and how much does it cost you to fill the tank up? Daily i would be driving it about 7-10 min from my house to work, if anything else it would be for leisure but thats not something that would happen every day.
Can anyone tell me the difference on MPG between the 2013 and 2014 prerunner 4cyl?

 

I average 22 on the 2013 4x4. Prerunner should get better mileage.

I get about 400 per tank. I don't always drive to work so it's more pleasure than commuting. Hard to say.

 

My 2.7 averages 500 miles a tank. For my job I drive about 1500 to 3000 miles a month. I'd say thats about twice what the average person would drive. A regular person would probably fill up the tank maybe every 1.5 to 2 weeks. Gas around here is around $3.7- $4.1 per gallon for 87 octane, totaling to around $65-$80 per fill. If you just need interior space, and you are concerned about fuel economy, perhaps consider an SUV such as a CRV, RAV4 or Escape.

 

If you want good gas mileage don't look at a truck. Plain and simple lol

 

I assume when you say family you are also talking about one of the "dreaded" 2.7 L Double Cab Tacoma's? The 2.7 L was in no way designed to handle that much truck, let alone your family, and you're mileage will be terrible. 2.7 L in a regular cab will get around 20-27 mpg and check out fuelly if you want a more accurate number than that. Any trucks larger than the base regular cab tend to feel underpowered with the 2.7 L for most who come from cars. I say underpowered because for some they're fine in access cabs or regular cabs but if you like the get up and go of your sport coupe than that 4 cylinder Tacoma is going to feel like a brick, especially with a bigger cab on it.

As others have said don't buy a truck if mileage is your first concern and you don't need to tow. If I were you I'd hit up Hyundai again and see if they'll cut you a deal to get you into a Santa Fe. Often they will go a bit further than other manufacturers/dealerships to keep your money. That 2.0 L Turbo in the Santa Fe is in my wifes Sonata and that car gets bitchin mileage.

 

I just got a stock 03' prerunner with a 2.7 4 cylinder. 31 Mpg, cumulative over a year of tracking.

 

Makes sense. The '03's are smaller and lighter than the newer trucks.

 

Dnt no how you guys are getting those numbers??? My best has been 20mpg. Most of the time 18mpg. I even keep my foot out of it. Average speed 55 to 60

 

I don't buy that for a second. I had a 99 2.7 Prerunner Auto Extra Cab. It averaged between 18 and 19 mpg. Running 245s and every thing else stock.

 

Maybe he's still on stock tires and wheels?

 

There is just no way, stock tires for a prerunner of that vintage were 225s. 31mpg is Honda civic territory around that year model

 

put 1k on my '14 access cab 4x4 auto 2.7 getting around 18mpg. I do a lot of city driving 35-40 mph average in hawaii...too much stop n go traffic lol
