Happy Thanksgiving, just a couple of questions. Just picked up a 21 TRD sport. Tossed up between a soft tri-fold or hard tri-fold toneau covers. How would the soft hold up to snow/ice in winter? Also, the letter inserts on the tail gate, looking for ones that will stand up to the salt of a New England winter.

    Thanks in advance

Happy Thanksgiving, a soft cover is just that...soft. We got a genuine Toyota tri-fold and I can tell that it is very strong and durable...I live in Alberta where we get tons of snow...it can cope with it like nothing!

The hard cover will be somewhat more of a theft deterrent.

Have the Backflip MX4 - so far its holding up well in the snow. Took that over the stock hard cover as it is flush with the bed and you can open it up completely (almost like a headache rack).

I have the OEM hard tri-fold on my 2020 and I really like it. I think the hard covers are more of a theft deterrent and might hold up better long term. I can’t comment on snow, but the soft cover I had on my Tundra would collect rain. With snow, I would worry it would stretch the cover over time. I would go hard cover, but that’s just my thoughts.

    Happy Thanksgiving as well!

I wouldn't waste my time/$ on a soft-top. If you want to invest a couple grand a Diamondback (or similar) steel hardtop is the way to go, I just couldn't justify that much $ for my intended use.

I went with the Toyota OEM Tri-fold hardtop and am very happy with it considering it locks, is durable and is water resistant.

Notice I said water resistant, NOT water-tight, as some water will enter bed if exposed to heavy rains.

For example, you will notice a little water in my bed below the morning after (2) days of rain. No much, but as I stated not water-tight.

All in All, IMO, you can beat the OEM for what it costs and function it preforms. Also, get a OEM bed mat as well, they're great.
