    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to both the forum and Tacomas, and I could use a little advice.

My son just graduated and we helped him get his dream truck - A slightly used White 2019 SR5.

There are a few easy mods that we've already done (Side Step Bars, Weathertech Floor Mats and Wind Deflectors, and Interior LED's), but what he really wants to add are black rims and nicer tires, and black fender flares.

The truck currently has factory rims and Firestone Destination P245/75R16 tires, and what he likes are the Method 301 rims with BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2's which are LT265/65R17.

We went to tirerack.com because they had wheel / tire packages and you could view them on the vehicle, but everything we pick says "aggressive fitment". The 2 choices we have for offset on the rims are 0 and -12.

    My questions are:
    1. Can anyone tell us if this will rub? (We want to avoid lifting it for now if at all possible).
    2. Which offset?
    3. If that combo won't work without a lift kit, is there something close that will?
    4. If we do find a combo that would work - What would be a good price to ask for the existing rims / tires?
    5. We found a bunch of black fender flare kits - Some look as if you have to bolt them through the body (Not sure if that's just for looks or not) - Any recommendations on fender flare kits that you do not have to drill through the body?
Picture of factory rims and current tires:

Thanks in advance for any help - I've got until Mid August to do projects with him and then he's off to college

    Welcome to TW!

So let’s get right into it.

Below is a chart indicating your tire size preference with your 17 inch rim size (in black).

You’ll notice in the (red) overlay this is representing 265/75r16 tire size. That’s what I currently run on my Tacoma.

With that being said, the tire size should not be an issue for the truck without a lift. I can’t comment on the -12 vs 0 offset for the following reason. The picture I’ve included below, is of my previous SR5 truck with no lift and with that particular setup it was just the 16” rim with 0 offset and 265/75R16 tires. I had no wheel spacers at that time on my truck so that’s why I can’t comment on the -12 offset for a stock truck. I had no issues with rubbing with my setup. There were maybe 2 times I noticed a slight rub when turning and hitting a large bump at the same time. But was VERY rare. So your son will be good to go!!

Just so you are aware, my current configuration has me with the exact same wheel and tire setup as above 265/75R16 but with 1.25” wheel spacers. I also have a 2 inch lift on my Cement color truck and once I added the spacers it definitely rubbed even with the 2 inch lift. It took some minor trimming of some plastic to fix but wanted to let you know for future reference.

Obviously it’s always better to purchase a wheel with the proper offset if he’s looking for an aggressive stance over spacers. But that was the option I had since I wasn’t gonna go out and purchase new wheels right away. Hope this all helps.

He should be fine with the 0 offset wheel. The -12 might have a slight rub an full compression of the suspension. You didn’t mention wheel width. If he goes 17x8 0 offset he’ll be fine. The 265/65/17 is only .1 taller and .8 wider.
