I have several vehicles and was recently given a low mileage 2016 Tacoma, 3.5, crew cab.

In changing the oil, after watching several youTubes , I gathered my tools and set to work.

After removing the skid plate and the oil drain plug I moved to the filter canister. I used the 3/8ths drive extension in the canister drain plug but the ENTIRE canister turned. So instead of removing the canister drain followed by removing the canister, I just took them off together.

I don’t see how it may make a difference but I just wanted to check. I replaced the filter insert and big O-ring but never removed the canister drain plug.

Surely I’m not the first person to experience this .... I tried the search function but didn’t see anyone else with this prob.

Is there any reason I should worry about this?

    Thanks!

That drain plug is there just to make it less messy removing the canister. I don’t think you will have any issues if you just leave it. At the most, it might start a slow drip after a while.

I do replace mine everytime though, never had issue with it being stuck.

Nah you’re good. Only issue is a potentially bigger mess. Easiest way to get that smaller plug off is to smack the ratchet with your hand or rubber mallet or something. The main canister can only spin so fast because its own oring, so if u give it a little shock, it’ll usually loosen up. Don’t over torque anything. It’ll become a pain next oil change

I'll still never understand why Toyota used this 1950's-canister-technology. It's idiotic. Gimme a spin-on every time....

I agree but I had a 2001 BMW 528 with a canister system that was cool. The canister was on TOP of motor and easily accessible. Easiest oil change ever.

Lots of oil change threads these days...

The filter housing plug area, from what I've seen on YouTube, has a spring loaded valve (that's what I'll call it) for pushing that plastic plug in that allows oil to come out. (Pre-draining)

I find it interesting that if you remove the canister & bypass the housing plug, there would be even more of a mess than where the plastic plug (that comes with the new paper filter) would insert to allow the oil to flow at a slower pace.

I'm really looking forward to doing my own oil change so I can give an actual testimony here instead of visually explaining something I haven't done yet.

Sounds like the last person to change the filter took care not to over tighten. Usually from others, the experience is the opposite.

It is not a bad idea to buy a spare filter canister. They can break or crack while trying to remove. They are not expensive and will save you a lot of aggravation if it breaks on a Sunday afternoon oil change.

i agree with the others, no harm.

Thanks. I’ve been looking at some or the aluminum replacement options and those make a lot of sense to me.

I gotta say, I’m a member of several forums, mostly motorcycle and truck sites, but not all are as helpful as this one! Thanks everyone.

Here's one I bought off Amazon in Jan this year...it was $40 then. It includes the housing plug.
