Looking to pick up another expensive hobby (again), back 9ish years ago I got into photography shooting with a Nikon d90. I’ve since sold it off and haven’t picked up a camera other then my phone in years. Basically going back to new to the hobby.

Looking to get back into it but what’s a good starting out camera now a days? Looking for obviously automotive pictures, take family photos, outdoors, and im very interested in Astro photography.

recommend me a good kit to get, don’t want to go into debt with a rig but I will spend a good bit of I need to (I always tend to lean towards higher end stuff when it comes to my hobbies).

some pics from years ago (over edited) and some from my phone 0D32D083-539F-416C-81DC-28B3B776D461.jpg 29184106-1DCA-4FE3-A2D2-F3CADC75E7C7.jpg

    welcome back to the hobby!

I'm no pro myself but I would maybe suggest a Sony A6400 point and shoot camera with a non kit lens, either a fixed 50 or 85 for starters or something like a sigma 24-70. Those are actually my 3 main lenses. I shoot with a Sony A7iii (just came out with the IV). Love this camera. Here is one of my photos. I'm at work so this is the only one I have access to. You can look at others on IG: 4lo_taco most of my photos are with the sigma 24-70 and the sony 85.

I just use a Canon Rebel EOS. I bought the camera package that you can get at Target and Best Buy.I photograph Nostalgia drag racing for a magazine and this is all I have ever needed. Camera takes great pictures no matter what I shoot. Check out the black car launching so hard it is twisting the frame and drivers door popped open.

Thanks for the reply guys, I actually picked up a A6400 with a kit 18-135 and I bought a sigma 30mm 1.4. Have been playing over the holiday with it.

I almost picked up a a7ii before I got the A6400, reviews said the A6400 was a little better but I really want a full frame. I’ll likely pick up a a7iii in the future.

Nice! glad you found something. That's a great camera to "get started" with. I've seen some fantastic work from the 6400s. It more so the person behind the camera vs the actual camera that makes a good picture. You can learn alot with that camera and that will allow you to figure out what really interest you. I used to have a A7ii and had someone steal it out of my car but luckily the iii came out about 2 weeks later and have loved it ever since. The only thing I would suggest is ditch the kit lens (sell it) and pick up something aftermarket. They are 90% of the time far superior to any kit lens. If it fits your budget. If not, work with what you got and get familiar with Lightroom.

Have an A7Rii and love it. There are newer models, with improved sensors and focusing systems, but I find this sensor is still outstanding for what I do (mostly landscapes). For the Sony E mounts the Sony Carl Zeiss 24mm F/1.8 E lens is unreal for image quality. Have had mine for years and love it. Buy one used...

Canon fan boy here. Depending on how much you're looking to spend a canon R could be a good mirrorless full frame to start with. I use an R6 and a 50mm 1.8 for most everything. The 50mm is only $199 is a killer lens.

Yes, 50mm is pretty much the sweet spot for lens design as far as cost vs. image quality.
