Engineers can't get out of the room with each other at a critical design review without management keeping them focused and making decisions.

"I miss that power from the V8. "
That's the problem, you have buyers remorse, sell it and buy a V-8. And if you'd gotten under your truck 150k mile Chebby, you would have seen the leaking front main, rear main engine, trans front, rear and rear diff yoke seals leaking. Or maybe that's why you sold it??
    Still reliable though, just saying..

"because it has a history of being durable and problem free but these newer trucks are getting a LOT of complaints on here"
That history has not been disproved yet, 2nd gen had problems too and still lasted and are all over the roads with 300+k miles or there about.
And yeah I get it about the complaints, one person alone has some 10k on here mostly negative and there maybe 4 more. Not bad out of 260k trucks sold though wouldn't you agree? And btw, some of these folks are still driving their Tacos not trading them. If I had that many issues I wouldn't be here by now.
And no, I don't work for Toyota, they would have fired me by now by the way I ragged them for a much delayed CPS sensor recall lolo!

If those trucks would have got a hold of bad fuel like 45k others, you'd been without a fuel gauge for a while. Many Fords got knocked out too, but Toyota owners sailed right thru all that bad fuel without issues because they're made tough!
They're highly sought out by third world countries where bad fuel is a fact of life. One third mud. 2/3rds water and sulfur or other bad chit, and they keep on ticking.

    Edit: link to bad fuel
Sulfur in gas damages fuel gauges:
    http://royaldutchshellgroup.com/2004/06/13/the-times-picayune-a-bad-case-of-gas/

“Although Williams appears to have learned what broke her fuel gauge, the mystery of the tainted gas has confounded gasoline industry executives, public officials and automotive experts in New Orleans and several other locales where similar gas appears to have been sold.
In recent weeks more than 45,000 drivers scattered across at least five states have reported car problems that have been linked to bad fuel, which contains unusual amounts of a type of sulfur not normally found in gasoline.”

“Among the 48 people who contacted The Times-Picayune in recent weeks about gas gauge problems, 36 of them, or 75 percent, drive General Motors vehicles. That mirrors the pattern United Refining has seen, said Larry Loughlin, a vice president with the Pennsylvania company. About 78 percent of those who reported gauge problems to the company drove GM vehicles, he said.”
“We always try to improve our vehicles,” Rios said. “We hope (the new sender units) will be less susceptible to corrosion from fuels that have elevated levels of elemental sulfur.”

That's the difference, its the little things!

    Game on!
    Cheers!

As an ex second gen owner I'm glad you are enjoying your truck... but don't start knocking this new one.
The trucks will be virtually the same in the end.
I have a manual so maybe that is one reason why I have zero complaints... or I just don't have a unrealistic expectation.
I went from a second gen (07 AC MT OR) to an Audi s4 (V8 6MT). Even though I loved the truck and was only good to me, I could not deal with that interior anymore and having to yell to have a conversation when going past 65 on the highway. It just felt like I was stuck in a 90's plastic box and new tech like blue tooth (especially with MT), touch screen blah blah... I felt like I wanted something more updated. After enjoying my Audi... a lot... I kept thinking about my truck and how I missed it for random reasons.

I remember reading the article below sometime in 2015 or early '16 and knowing I was going to trade in my Audi for another Taco as soon as possible:

    http://www.motortrend.com/news/10-most-important-changes-to-the-2016-toyota-tacoma/

I don't understand this third gen bashing... it's so weird to me. It's not like most of us were not previous generation owners. If you go back and remember, we got recalls for the other generations too...

    Sorry, but this is BS.

I know folks on this site love to bash domestic full size trucks, but they are as good as anything out there.

The roads are full of full size Chevy and Ford trucks with 200k+ miles and still going strong.

Ford and Chevy combined sell 10x as many trucks as Tacoma so logic would dictate 10x the problems, but that is not the case.

Note that I am referring to the trucks, not the cars.

The second gen had a couple of bad years, the 2009 most notably but it started off better overall than the third gen in both Initial Quality and in dependability and user feedback from what I've seen. The third gen by far has had the most criticized reception of any "new gen" and that's saying something given the major changes between gen 1 and gen 2

Now Smittty, I know you are a "Hater" and all...

But just for reference, how many non-routine maintenance visits to the dealer did your POS domestic have vs your Tacoma?

Zero in 3+ years and over 36K miles. I wished I had saved the service records so I could scan and post them compared to the FILE Folder I have growing on my Tacoma.

So the obvious answer is that you are just being overly picky with your Tacoma whereas you were all too willing to overlook the undoubtedly numerous faults with your domestic, right?

Well based on stuff you read here, you would think my GMC would break down within a year of ownership and have a dozen recalls. Funny as I don't recall a single recall with it. It was a 2011 Sierra Denali. I did have a battery go bad in year 3, the dealership replaced it for free during routine maintenance. It is not uncommon for batteries to only last about 3 years here in AZ because the heat kills them.

Only reason I traded it is I felt it was "TOO NICE" to take hunting and the gas mileage I was getting was about 9.3 city...maybe 15 highway. It was an all wheel drive with 6.2L motor. If I had kept it I would have lifted it slightly, modified the front to get a little more clearance and some larger tires. It just wasn't ideal for commuting at that point after dumping all that money into it and it was a $55K truck to begin with... so I picked up a little car for commuting and bought a used 2003 Ford Ranger with 96k miles on it to use for Hunting and off road stuff. Uh oh, a 100K mile ranger??? surely that thing was a total piece of domestic shit too right?!! Nope truck was bulletproof. I put another 60K miles on it with NOT ONE single issue other than regular maintenance. The Ranger got about 18mpg and had plenty of power with great throttle response on the 4.0L engine. Even better, I bought it for 6 grand and sold it for 5500 within 2 days of listing it for sale. Probably could have sold it for more if I had waited and listed it higher.

It took 12 years to get defrosting rearview mirrors and a tailgate lock.

Good luck with Toyota reading the forums.

Haters gonna hate but here's the facts on OP concerns...

The Op is asking about residual value or commonly known as resale value to the owner/seller.
This is based on reliability/durability in the market place. It’s not decided by CR or any other media outlet, it’s the ppl who vote on this, and look at the tale of the tape from Kelly blue book:
    https://www.kbb.com/new-cars/best-resale-value-awards/best-resale-top-10-cars/

Tacoma #1: At 36 months whopping 71.8% resale vaue Bamm!
#8- GMC is Sierra: A dismal 56.8% Booo!
The people in the real world know who makes the most reliable durable truck, ill-regardless of what TW and all the media throw at it, and the Chebbys fails!!

Even the Honda Ridgeline at #7 beats the GMC:

The Honda Ridgeline returns for 2017 mixing a more truck-like design with many of the same clever features and appealing qualities that have made it so popular with owners.
    Resale Value
    • at 36 months: 64.4%
    • at 60 months: 47.6%
The Toyota Tacoma midsize truck underwent a comprehensive redesign last year, but its customary position at the top of this list remains unchanged.
#1 in Resale Value Toyota Tacoma:
    • at 36 months: 71.8%
    • at 60 months: 58.4%

Mixing strong styling with a luxury-like Denali grade, the GMC Sierra full-size truck appeals to a broad range of buyers.
    Resale Value
    • at 36 months: 56.8%
    • at 60 months: 47.5%

What more can be said about this?
Which one would you rather own??
Who’s top dog in the pen??
    Who's big daddy??
    Hehe!

    Cheers!

Man you drinkin a lot of that toyota kool aid huh? You know those resale values set on old history not the new generation so it will be quite a awhile before we see what these resale values truly hold for the new generation. You seem to be blinded by the light!

Great post! Unfortunately some of the people here think facts are unimportant and their misguided mythical warped viewpoint is the truth.

Residual value of vehicles is the only true metric that matters.
