I think you misunderstand what I'm getting at or perhaps I phrased it wrong. I also think my truck has adequate power (at least with the A/C off). Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. But my point is I would like to buy a new truck with roughly 15% more power and 15% better fuel mileage for roughly the same price as the current MSRP. And if Toyota had redesigned the 4cyl this would be a very real possibility. If the report is true that the 2TR will soldier on, I will look elsewhere for a new truck, if I stay with a 4 cyl. I will look to a car company that was willing to spend R&D money in order to give me a more modern product. All the other trucks you mentioned in your comparison were built when gas was less than $1.50/gal. Times have changed and it is important to me to have a modern, powerful, and efficient powertrain.

Good to know. I would test drive DCSB with the 2.7 IF they made it with manual and in 4x4. The difference in weight between 2.7 AC 4x4 and DC 4x4 is pretty negligible anyway. This configuration however does not exist, neither does Frontier or 2015 Colorado/Canyon in DCSB 4x4 4cyl manual :(

5100's all around with OME 884 at 0. Weathertechs, Carhartt seat covers. BFG KO2's 265/70/17. T4R SEMA wheels. 18% tint on front windows. General Springs HD 4 leaf pack, Leer 100 XR shell.
I owned a 3.8 wrangler and drive a 3.6 pentastar in another dodge product. its got more but its not all that. the automatic tranny is driving me crazy with all the shifting. not a fan but its a fleet vehicle.

I have a 96 reg cab 4x4 with a 3rz (150 hp at 4800 RPM, 177 lb·ft of torque at 4000 RPM.) And I would say its is barely adequate, don't get me wrong it is okay for what it is. Your truck has 159 hp @ 5200 rpm; 180 lb.-ft. @ 3800 rpm and has a curb weight of 3615 lbs. It has 9 more HP, 3 more lb ft, and weighs 430lbs more plus the 400-600 pounds in the box and your still saying it is adequate? I find that very hard to believe. The only weight on my truck is a 75lb bumper.

The real 3rd Gen Tacoma will be the last generation Tundra.

Funny, I'm talking to a couple of stealerships here in the new digs, looking to replace my old Taco.

Got quoted 24.5K for a brand new 4 cyl 5 speed 4x4 access cab. Have to order new, as they've had exactly ONE manual Taco come through as used in the last two years.

And, he's playing the zero info card on the '16s. The line I'm getting is "Toyota hasn't told us a damn thing at all"

:notsure: The 2nd gen is much like a T-100. If the 3rd gen gets any bigger...
Truth is I don't know and don't really care.

My thoughts on what will be included Generation #3
-Tacoma will be stamped into the tailgate
-Push button start will be added
-Driver Side Knee Airbag will be standard
-Many parts from the updated 2015 Corolla will be incorporated as with what we presently have from the older Corolla/Matrix (Switches, Door Handles, Heater, Blower Motor, interior door locks and handles and many parts behind the dash)
    -282 Horse Power 3.5-V6
-Heated Mirrors will come standard on TRD Models
    -6-speed Auto -But I hope a 7-speed is planned....

That all sounds great. Hmmmm. . . .7 Speed - Me like. Hopefully the shifting would be smooth cause it would be doing a lot of it.

If you haven't driven a new 7-8 speed auto tranny they are a dream.

I have driven a few (Ram 1500 8 speed and Touareg 8 speed) which are the same ZF 8speed. A fantastic transmission that I would have in any vehicle I owned in a second.

No i haven't. Actually I have driven sticks for the last 15 years straight until I just bought my 2014 Baja Auto a few months ago.

I swear to god I still have to conscientiously think about what I'm doing when starting / shutting off my truck I'm so used to driving stick - this Auto thing is hard!!!

I would love to drive one of those transmissions for sure and do love my Auto 5 speed and it is time for Toyota to squeeze some extra mpgs out of a 7 or 8 speed in the Tacoma.

    More than I can afford
Since this is pretty much a spitballing thread, I am going to throw this out there to see if I am correct when the truck is released.

The new Tacoma will have a front end very similar to the current 4runner.

Taillights will have the high, creased look (hard to describe, but look at the current Tundra tails). There will be accompanying styling changes on the bedsides too.

Basic cab structure (door openings, windshield and roofline) will be unchanged from current model.

Interior will be modernized. Automatic climate controls, power seats, a real "infotainment" system, pushbutton start. Most will pretty much be parts bin engineered from stuff they already have in other vehicles. They make a ton of money on options like this, the R&D money has already been spent.

The 4cyl and the 5 lug trucks will go away entirely, standard cab has already been dropped.

And the biggest thing (IMO) is that this might very well be the last revision of the Tacoma. I think it will go away entirely in about 5-7 years.

These trucks are becoming more trouble then they are worth for Toyota. My bet is they will do a FWD, 4cyl, possibly hybrid, unibody "trucklet" sold as a Scion, ditch the Tacoma and keep the Tundra. The prices on the Tundra will continue to rise dramatically as they try to keep sales numbers low and margin high to offset the CAFE challenges these trucks put on them as a company.

Amen! My ideal Tacoma would be a 5 lug, AC, V6, firm suspension and ground clearance on par with a Frontier. I like the look of the pre runner, but I don't need the extra height.

I think the real point he's missing is a different power train and tranny. Mentioned new emission standards that'll be a problem for the tacoma and will kill it in 5-7 years, how can you say that thinking Toyota will keep the same thing in it?
Look at the land cruiser, they're still offering it, I know hardly anyone that has the newer luxurious versions and I hardly see any on the road. You would think that it would be a bigger problem to them than the tacoma.
I hope to shit everything changes, body style, interior, tech. It's time for something completely new.

It seems like everyone is pretty focused on that 3.5 making its way into the Tacoma, if so I hope it brings 300+HP. Colorado is already at 305 so they will be behind if they only bring 280 or so.

Imho none of these trucks need 300hp, but it is hard to stop as every manufacturer has to keep beating each other to sell as in this part of the world more and bigger is always better. Now since GM offers 300hp V6 in mid size segment next target is 320hp for Nissan and Toyota to beat. Then repeat cycle again.

More HP usually means less torque down low.

I would way rather have 280hp and more torque down lot than a screaming 305 hp engine that didn't make power until near the redline.

It also depends a lot of the tranny. A good set of gears can really make up for a lack in power, at least until you start to tow.
