Why do trucks have carpet?
Is it for sound or comfort or what?
Vinyl or similar I would think would be cheaper and easier to clean.....rant over.

 

If it's only a work truck - I agree. Since My Tacoma is my primary ride, I prefer the carpet and I put plastic floor mats on it during rough use/winter.

Looks like they decided to move components to the right, get rid of that taco lean.

If we're picking out motors, I'd vote for the 1UR-FSE. I think the 2GR-FSE would need to be spooled up too tight to get decent torques, but the 1UR-FSE is a dual VVT small-block V8 (with a timing chain) putting out a respectable 385hp and 370 torques.

Relax the tuning a bit to focus more on torques at lower RPMs, sacrafice some powers, and I think you'd have a bullet proof motor that would have enough power to tow at freeway speeds without fear of getting run over by 18-wheelers going up hill, and I'm quite certain that you'd still see an increase in mileage in normal day-to-day driving.

Listen to the argument everyone makes when considering a mid-size truck, like the Taco or the Frontier. It's almost as much money as a full size, doesn't get any better mileage and has less power. Want to make the mid-size trucks more appealing? Give them more power, closer to what you'd get with an F150/1500 and more people will flock to them. I don't have the room or the patience to drive a full-size truck. Everytime I buy one I end up regretting the decision. They are too fsuking big. The Mid-Size Taco is closer in size to the full-size trucks of the 60s and 70s (about 3-4 inches narrower is all), easier to park, easier to drive, but they need more go's.

 

You'll never see the 1UR in a Tacoma. It would infringe on Tundra sales and there's much more profit in a Tundra. Honestly about a 10-20% jump in power is something you'll probably realistically see in the Gen3. The 2GR will do fine, they'll change the cams, fuel maps, and ignition/cam timing and then it'll act more like a truck motor. It'll probably sacrifice some of the hp but they'll probably get 300-320ft/lb out of it.

 

Yup, you'll see a big power jump, small torque jump, and a huge efficiency jump with a DI 3.5L over the old 1GR.

 

So nobody thinks it will get an engine that Toyota hasn't used, something completely new? Is it not possible or just highly unlikely?

 

I wouldn't care if it had 300 horsepower but if it could hit 300+ in torque that would be nice.

 

I would hope it would get better numbers than that in EPA-I don't mean to be greedy but I would like to see the Tacoma stomp other trucks' specs like it did in 2005.

 

Remember it's also going to be tuned using 87 octane and not 93 like the current 2GR-FSE. I'm guessing 280-290 hp and 270 lb/ft on regular pump gas.

Dollars to donuts, they end up using the dual VVT 4.0 they are currently using in the 4-Runner. 270hp and 278 torques. Which is kinda' unfortunate. The truck would be awesome with a small block V8 and 325-350 torques.

I honestly don't see them going down from a 4.0 to a 3.5, regardless of that the hp/torque numbers are.

Realistically they could. These days it's all about fuel economy. To think they haven't considered that in the past 10 years would be unthinkable.

 

The 1GR from the 4Runner is a good engine, but that was a last gen engine. It should have been in the taco in 2009, but the economy going to hell killed that. I don't think we'll see an old engine in the new Tacoma.

 

This makes me wonder-why has no one on TW put the 4R engine in a Tacoma? Forgive me if I just stepped on a land mine...
