OMG, Big Ben must be feeling two inches tall today. How do you NOT spike the ball in that situation? I mean I'm sorry but that has got to be in the top 5 biggest fuck ups I have ever seen in the NFL.

I've got no idea why they were going for a spike fake anyway. The clock was already stopped; why would an opponent think you needed to spike it? Just kick the damn field goal

At home to boot! You always go for overtime at home are you kidding me, why they didn't kick is just absolutely mind boggling.

That's not true. Maybe a few positions you could generalize that for but certainly not all.

The clock is started (after a 10 second run down) as soon as the ball is placed by the official, after an official/booth review.

Edit: clock is started on the whistle after the ball is placed

Right, but they didn't need to spike the ball to stop the clock to leave themselves time for a field goal; all they had to do was line up and kick one. That's why I don't understand that play call; the Pats would know that they didn't need to spike the ball, so why would they fall for a fake one? Doesn't make sense.

I figured we were both making untrue statements, though. :notsure:

They ran a play AFTER the booth review. Clock WAS running which is why everyone was running to the line.

Yes I'm well aware. Someone said they didn't need to spike because the clock was NOT running. I was correcting and informing them the clock WAS in fact running, as well as a 10 second clock run down due to the NFLs bullshit review clock run down rule.

Edit: may have forgotten they ran another play, but was tackled in bounds hence the clock still running. Either way. Clock was ticking down

Rats, I had forgotten that they got tackled inbounds.
Play still doesn't make sense; not sure why Ben would try to force a throw to a guy that was triple covered after the Pats obviously didn't fall for the fake spike

I forgot about that play as well. But ya not the smartest play perhaps. A spike would have been smarter to reset for better last play or kick the field goal. It is what it is. Steelers are still in the playoffs regardless

From what I remember, the clock was running. Darrius Heyward Bey caught a short crossing route and was tackled in bounds at like the 6 yard line or whatever it was. But even so, the fake spike had one guy (Eli Rogers) running a quick slant...I didnt see any other receivers running anywhere. And there were like 6 Patriots defenders covering him.

EDIT: Just saw the previous posts..

The clock was running. Either way, you are at home, you always, ALWAYS go for the overtime in that situation. Dumbest thing I have seen this year in a game.

He had possession. If a rusher crosses the goal line, but a defender knocks it out of his hands once the ball has crossed the goal line, it’s a TD. He clearly had possession of the ball when the ball crosses the goal line. The ground can’t cause a fumble. It’s a stupid rule. By the letter of the rule, it was the correct call. But it’s a terrible, terrible rule.

If a receiver dives for the pylon, and the ball comes loose after hitting the pylon, it’s still a TD. Becaue he has possession as it crosses the line. How was that play Any different? You can’t say he doesn’t possess the ball becaause he caught it stretched out, tucks it, turns and lunges for the goal line. Clear possession.

He was going to the ground in the process of making the catch. Which means he has to maintain the ball throughout the contact with the ground to make a catch. He didn't keep control, so no catch. The ground can't cause a fumble, but it can cause an incomplete pass. He was never a runner by the rules, so when he crossed the goal line is irrelevant.
