1995 Season. Unfortunately, the close but no cigar Niners haven't won one since the 1994 season.

 

Which is tougher on a fan, not getting close in the post season, or frequently getting close but not winning it all?

Cowboys … 28 years, 5 playoff wins, 0 trips to the NFC title so naturally no Super Bowls.

49ers … 29 years, 17 playoff wins, 8 trips to the NFC title, 3 trips to the Super Bowl, no titles.

 

Beats the hell out of not going to the big one at all over that span. Sure, you want to win it but so does the other team.

 

I can remember all the titles before the current drought so it’s easy for me to be philosophical about it. Ask a Bills fan my age how it felt to lose 4 in a row, now that had to leave a mark on your soul. As for teams that are perennially bad ask a Pats fan what it was like before Brady.

 

I wasn’t trolling these two fan bases (this time), I just felt these were great examples of the question. As a Chiefs fan for decades before Mahomes, I know what it’s like to be in the Cowboy’s situation. But luckily we went straight to getting trophies without living through years of ‘almost’.

 

Age is a factor, as I was only looking at the most recent generation in my example. Boomers can remember the good old days (like my Huskers in the 70’s-90’s) and it helps some.

 

Not making it at all has to be harder. Of course, not making it at all for too long of a period makes you America's sweetheart.

So, basically, what we all really need is for Dallas to make it to a Super Bowl sometime in the next 30 years, but also get absolutely curbstomped in said Super Bowl.

 

Just goes to show that in general generalities don’t apply. Nothing is the same for everyone, even within groups be they fan groups, age groups, groupies, you name it.

 

Maybe polarizing it what makes them America’s team ‘cause they certainly aren’t universally loved. I think you nailed it on the truly sweetheart teams, Lions, Browns, etc and I think the Bills have a special place reserved as well. No matter where you’re from there will be some extra fans for those teams when they finally break through

 

I think the Chiefs fit that in 2019/2020. Nearly 50 years of post-season futility 2nd only to the Lions. Plus very few people could dislike Andy. But 4 years later they are the new villain to every outside of Chiefs Kingdom. Mahomes family plus the Kelce/Swift madness just makes it easier for everyone to want them to move out of the way for the next sweetheart. Can’t blame everyone for that. But as part of the kingdom I just have to embrace the villain role.

 

Good point, but also as a san Francisco fan I can’t be too mad when you consider the success our other teams here in the bay have had, 3 World Series and 4 nba championships all in the last 15 years plus 3 Super Bowl appearances… could be worse

 

And 1 of your MLB titles was against KC (if that helps).

 

Lifelong Patriots fan..yup. The couple of times we got to the big show we got smacked around. Or all the years the Red Sox were either shitbums or just oh so close to it.

That was a great series. The morning of Game 7, I was working down in Carmel and almost got T-boned by somebody with a George Brett sticker on their pickup about a mile from my job site. It was at that point that I knew we would win. Ended up buying the entire bar a round that night. Fortunately, it was a small bar.
